Yozhef Sabo Supports Myron Markevych's Candidacy for Ukraine National Team Coach

Renowned Ukrainian football expert and former player Yozhef Sabo has expressed his strong support for Myron Markevych as the ideal candidate to lead the national football team of Ukraine.

Yozhef Sabo, a prominent figure in Ukrainian football, known for his past as a player and coach of Kyiv's Dynamo, has shared his insights regarding the future coach of Ukraine's national team. In a recent commentary for the publication Ekspres, Sabo stated that he believes 75-year-old Myron Markevych is the best candidate for this significant role.

“Sergiy Rebrov was a good player and has had some success at the club level as a coach, but unfortunately, he lacks the necessary experience to lead the national team,” emphasized Sabo. He argues that Markevych, who achieved considerable success with Dnipro, including reaching the final of the UEFA Europa League, is the ideal choice for this position.

It is worth noting that Myron Bohdanovych Markevych took charge of the Ukrainian national team in February 2010 and is remembered for being the first and only coach of the Blue and Yellow team who did not lose a single match during his tenure. However, his time in this role lasted only 6 months and 18 days, during which the team played several friendly matches.

During this brief period, Ukraine secured convincing victories over Lithuania with a score of 4-0, Romania (3-2), and Norway (1-0). Additionally, the team drew against the Netherlands' second squad, who were at that time the silver medalists of the 2010 World Cup. Although all these matches were classified as friendlies, the results indicate a successful start to Markevych's work with the national team.

Currently, Sergiy Rebrov, who took over as the head coach of the Ukrainian national team in 2023, has a contract with the Ukrainian Football Association (UAF) until July 30, 2026. However, his first major challenge on the international stage ended in disappointment when the team failed to qualify for the World Cup, losing in the playoffs to Sweden with a score of 1-3 in March of this year.

According to information available, the UAF is considering the possibility of extending Rebrov's contract in April 2026. However, the opinions of experts like Yozhef Sabo could significantly influence the decision-making process regarding the future coach of the national team. There is an active discussion within the football community about potential candidates for this important position, and Myron Markevych's candidacy undoubtedly deserves attention.

Thus, the question of the future coach of the Ukrainian national team remains open, and the forthcoming decisions by the UAF could have a substantial impact on the development of Ukrainian football in the coming years.
