European Commission on Russia's Threats to Baltic States: An Attack on One EU Member Means an Attack on the Entire Bloc

During a briefing in Brussels, European Commission spokesperson Toma Reignier stated that threats from the Russian Federation towards the Baltic countries represent a serious issue, asserting that any attack on one member of the European Union would be regarded as an attack on the entire bloc.

During a recent briefing held in Brussels, Toma Reignier, the spokesperson for the European Commission, addressed the escalating tensions in the Baltic region, attributing these to recent threats issued by Moscow. He emphasized that any aggression towards one of the European Union's member states would be interpreted as an assault on the entire bloc, reflecting the EU's commitment to collective defense.

Reignier refrained from delving into the specifics of the threats articulated by Russia but confirmed that the European Commission has been monitoring media reports regarding these statements, as well as the responses from individual Baltic nations. He remarked, "We have already clearly stated that an attack on one member state is an attack on the European Union as a whole. We have also prioritized the protection of our member states and the security of the entire EU in our four main defense projects."

The spokesperson further highlighted that the European Commission is closely observing developments in the region. He clarified that his statement regarding the comparison of an attack on one EU member state to an attack on the entire European Union does not reference Article 42.7 of the EU treaties, which has never been invoked before. Instead, he focused on the four flagship defense projects of the European Union.

Reignier reminded attendees that over the past month, the European Union has witnessed numerous violations of airspace by drones, underscoring the necessity for advancing defense projects to ensure security across Europe. When asked by Ukrinform about the potential discussion of this topic during the upcoming meeting between EU Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius and NATO Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, Alexis Greenkevich, Reignier indicated that he did not possess information regarding the meeting's agenda but promised that a relevant announcement would be published following the meeting.

It is important to note that the main defense initiatives of the EU include the Drone Defense Initiative, the Eastern Flank Guard, the European Air Shield, and the European Space Shield. These initiatives are aimed at enhancing the security and defense capabilities of EU member states in light of the increasing threats posed by Russia.

Additionally, it is noteworthy that the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued threats to the Baltic countries, accusing them of allegedly allowing Ukrainian long-range strike systems to utilize their airspace to attack Russian ports in the Baltic Sea. Andriy Kovalenko, the head of the Center for Counteracting Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, also confirmed that Ukrainian defense forces have successfully struck at least 30% of the oil storage tanks at the Russian Baltic port of Ust-Luga.

This situation underscores the critical importance of international support and cooperation to ensure stability in the region, as well as the necessity for the European Union to actively respond to emerging security challenges.
