Explosive Devices Discovered on Gas Infrastructure Between Serbia and Hungary
On Sunday, April 5, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced the discovery of explosive devices near a critical gas infrastructure site connecting Serbia and Hungary, raising serious concerns about regional energy security.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić made a significant announcement on Sunday, April 5, regarding the detection of explosive devices in the municipality of Kanjiža, located near a vital gas infrastructure facility that links Serbia with Hungary. According to Vučić, two large packages of explosives containing detonators were discovered, which has sparked serious concerns regarding the safety of gas supplies in the region.
In a telephone conversation with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Vučić informed him about the investigation's findings. "I told him that if there is a gas shutdown there, Hungary will be left without gas, and we in northern Serbia will also suffer," Vučić stated. These remarks underscore the critical importance of gas supply security for both nations, as any incidents could have severe repercussions for the energy stability of the region.
Vučić emphasized that the country would take ruthless action against anyone threatening vital infrastructure. "There are certain traces that I cannot discuss. It is a large area with a big lake, so the search took a long time, and helicopter units provided significant assistance. But it is evident that the world, or rather geopolitical games, will not leave us in peace, and that is why we must demonstrate the highest level of combat readiness," he noted, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
Additionally, Vučić reported that military forces have increased security around the gas station in the village of Jabari, considering the security threats that arose from the discovery of the explosive devices. These measures are deemed necessary to ensure the safety of critical infrastructure that meets the country's energy needs.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán confirmed his conversation with Vučić and announced that he had convened an emergency defense council meeting scheduled for later today. "The Serbian authorities have discovered a powerful explosive device and means to activate it at the most important gas infrastructure facility connecting Serbia and Hungary," he wrote on social media, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation and the need for urgent action.
This incident threatens not only the security of gas supplies between the two countries but also raises concerns about the overall stability of the region. In light of increasing geopolitical tensions, it is crucial for countries to act in concert and take all necessary measures to protect their infrastructure and ensure energy security.
