Drivers in Ukraine Face New Challenges Due to Rising Fuel Prices

The recent surge in fuel prices in Ukraine has come as a shock to many drivers, even those with stable financial situations. The alarming rise in prices at gas stations has left many feeling desperate and overwhelmed.

The recent spike in fuel prices in Ukraine has taken many drivers by surprise, even those who typically enjoy a stable financial situation. Gas station price boards are rapidly climbing, leaving drivers in despair as they grapple with the new reality. The situation has become so dire that some are willing to transform into true 'snails' on the road, attempting to save on fuel even if it means driving in the heat without air conditioning and forcing passengers to push the car uphill.

However, modern automotive engineering offers a multitude of ways to significantly reduce gasoline or diesel expenses without sacrificing comfort. By 2026, it is crucial to stop believing in outdated garage myths and start utilizing physics to your advantage. The biggest enemy of your bank account is your right foot. An aggressive driving style, characterized by frequent full-throttle starts at every green light and abrupt braking before the bumper of a neighboring car, can increase fuel consumption by 30-40%.

The key trick lies in predictability. Once you begin to accelerate smoothly from a standstill and remove your foot from the gas pedal in advance before intersections, your vehicle's onboard computer will immediately display much more pleasant figures. When you hit the highway, aim to maintain a speed between 70-90 km/h, as this is the range where the engine operates with the highest efficiency. If your car is equipped with cruise control, do not hesitate to use it, as electronics manage speed much better, avoiding microscopic jolts that imperceptibly but steadily burn extra fuel.

The second hidden reservoir for fuel savings is right beneath you. Low tire pressure creates the effect of a deflated ball: it makes the car harder to roll along the road, increasing resistance and, consequently, fuel consumption by up to 10%. Developing the habit of checking tire pressure at least once a month is perhaps the simplest way to save money without much effort. If you plan to purchase a new set of tires, be sure to pay attention to the European energy efficiency labeling. Tires rated A or B marked 'Fuel Efficient' can save you more than one tank of fuel on long distances due to their special rubber compound that minimizes rolling resistance.

Now, let's consider an important issue — climate control. For decades, older generations have taught us to turn off the air conditioning and roll down the windows to reduce fuel consumption. Today, this rule works almost in reverse. When you drive on the highway with open windows, your car's interior becomes a true parachute. The aerodynamic drag slows the body down so much that the engine expends significantly more energy overcoming it than it would to run the air conditioning compressor. Therefore, at speeds over 50 km/h, feel free to close the windows and enjoy the cool air.

At the same time, it is essential to critically assess the operation of other electrical devices in the cabin. Constantly plugged chargers, powerful subwoofers, or unnecessary portable refrigerators can significantly burden the generator, which, in turn, imperceptibly robs power from the engine. It's equally important to pay attention to the appearance of your vehicle. An empty roof box that you haven't removed since your winter trip can act as an aerodynamic brake, stealing up to 15% of your fuel daily. Additionally, take note of any extra items in the trunk. If you are carrying old spare parts or a bag of cement, remember that every 50 kg of extra weight adds a couple of percentage points to fuel consumption.

Of course, all these tricks will not work if the car is technically neglected. A dusty air filter forces the engine to literally suffocate in search of oxygen, while old, viscous oil complicates the operation of internal components. Even misaligned wheels work against you, forcing the tires to pull the car in different directions and overcome unnecessary resistance. Regular maintenance should be viewed not as an expense at the service station but as an investment in your own fuel independence.

Thus, the fight for every drop in the tank does not require sacrificing your usual rhythm of life or basic comforts. It is a matter of driving culture and elementary attention to the physics of the processes occurring during driving.
