US Vice President Jay D. Vance Criticizes Ukraine and Russia Over Territorial Disputes
US Vice President Jay D. Vance, during a recent visit to Hungary, expressed his views on the negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, stating that disputes over 'a few square kilometers' of territory are utterly unreasonable.
US Vice President Jay D. Vance, who recently visited Hungary, shared his perspective on the ongoing negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, emphasizing that the contention over 'a few square kilometers' of territory is completely impractical. Vance's comments were published in the British publication The Guardian and were also reported by Ukrainian media, including 'European Truth.'
In discussing the negotiation process, Vance questioned the rationale behind continuing the conflict for minor territorial gains, suggesting that Ukraine should consider the possibility of territorial concessions. He argued that the issue is not worth the human losses that both sides of the war have already endured.
"I would say to both the Russians and the Ukrainians: you know, at this stage we are talking about bargaining over a few square kilometers of territory back and forth. Is it worth the loss of hundreds of thousands more young Russian and Ukrainian men? Is it worth additional months or even years of high energy prices and economic devastation? We believe the answer is a resounding 'no,'" Vance stated.
The Vice President also noted that achieving peace requires active participation from both sides. "It takes two to tango," he emphasized, urging Ukrainians and Russians to find common ground on their own to bring the conflict to an end.
"So while Viktor (Orban) and President Trump will continue to work on a peaceful resolution, essentially, we can only open the door. The Russians and Ukrainians have to walk through it themselves," Vance added, highlighting that international mediators can only facilitate but cannot replace the independent efforts of the parties in seeking peace.
These comments from Vance have become a significant point of focus in the context of the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, which has persisted for over a year. The war has resulted in immense human and economic losses, and the issue of territorial disputes has become one of the key aspects of the negotiations.
It is worth noting that Vance has previously expressed support for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, underscoring his role in seeking pathways for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. At the end of March, he praised Orban again for his stance on Ukraine, which sparked some discussions in international circles.
In light of these events, Jay D. Vance's comments serve as yet another indication of how the international community is monitoring the developments in Ukraine and Russia, and what decisions may be made in the near future.
