Spring Car Maintenance: How to Prepare Your Vehicle for the New Season

As winter's harsh conditions give way to the warmth of spring, it’s crucial for car owners to address the hidden damages that winter has inflicted on their vehicles.

Winter road treatments and constant moisture leave marks on cars that cannot be washed away with regular soap at a self-service car wash. As the sun begins to warm the air, many of us prefer to enjoy the drive, ignoring the quiet groans of the suspension or the labored breathing of the engine. However, it is precisely now that the car requires the most attention, as salt and temperature fluctuations have taken their toll over the past three months.

Postponing basic maintenance until summer is a conscious decision to shorten the lifespan of the vehicle, even though most 'rescue' procedures can be performed by the owner in the garage in just a few hours, saving a significant amount on service costs. The primary damage during winter is inflicted on the undercarriage and hidden cavities. Chloride mixtures, which have been generously spread on our roads, have the ability to seep into the tiniest crevices, where they can corrode metal, brake lines, and electrical connectors for months. Even if the body shines, a chemical reaction may still be brewing beneath the surface.

The first thing to do in spring is to thoroughly wash the suspension and frame with high pressure. It is essential to clean every nook and cranny of the longitudinal beams and wheel arches to stop corrosion before it turns into perforations. This is not just a matter of aesthetics but a direct requirement for maintaining the warranty on the body. The engine also needs 'therapy' after winter. Engine oil, after several months of operation characterized by constant warming and short trips, accumulates condensate and products of incomplete fuel combustion. It loses its lubricating properties much faster than we tend to think, based on the numbers in the service book.

Changing the oil to fresh synthetic allows the engine to breathe easier at the high temperatures that are just around the corner. Alongside this, it is worth checking the air filter. A paper filter clogged with dust and salt acts as a blockage, forcing the car to consume more fuel. If the filter allows microscopic debris to pass through, it acts on the cylinders like sandpaper, methodically damaging the piston group.

A separate item on the spring checklist is the air inside the cabin. The filter, hidden behind the glove compartment, usually turns into a damp breeding ground for bacteria and mold over the winter. If you notice that the windows are fogging up more frequently and a strange smell has developed inside the cabin, it’s time to replace it. This is critical not only for health but also for the longevity of the entire climate control system, which won’t have to work at its limits trying to push air through a dirty barrier.

Don’t forget about the windshield wipers and the battery. The rubber of the wipers, under the influence of ice and road treatments, becomes hard and starts scratching the glass or leaving cloudy streaks. New wipers can be installed in a minute without any tools, instantly restoring perfect visibility during spring showers. Regarding the battery, its terminals often become covered with oxidation due to the same road salt. Cleaning the contacts and checking the charge level will save you from an unpleasant surprise when one morning the car simply refuses to start due to an internal short circuit.

Finally, it’s important to check the antifreeze level. In spring, the load on the cooling system increases, and any shortage of fluid can lead to overheating in the very first traffic jam. Remember: never open the radiator cap on a hot engine, as high pressure and scalding steam can result in guaranteed burns. Give the car a rest for half an hour, and only then add the necessary concentrate. Such simple steps do not require a mechanic's diploma, but they provide the same pleasant feeling of complete control over your vehicle when you know for sure that the car is ready for any journey.
