Vance Announces New Memoir on His Conversion to Catholicism
J.D. Vance, the former U.S. Vice President, has announced the release of his new memoir titled 'Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith,' set to be published on June 16 by HarperCollins.
As reported by Ukrinform, J.D. Vance, the former U.S. Vice President, has announced the release of his new memoir titled 'Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith,' which is scheduled for publication on June 16 by HarperCollins. This book is described as a 'spiritual exploration of what it means to be a Christian at various stages of Vance's life.'
Vance shared the news on the social media platform X, noting that he has been working on this project for 'a long time.' He characterized his book as a narrative about his return to religion, emphasizing that 'the book 'Communion' is about my personal journey and how I rediscovered my faith.'
According to information from the publisher, the memoir discusses Vance's loss of faith and his eventual return to Christianity. HarperCollins states that the book 'reveals how his faith guides his actions in public life and how it shapes his vision for the future.'
It is worth noting that Vance converted to Catholicism in 2019 at the age of 35, despite growing up in a family that adhered to not overly strict evangelical beliefs. This moment in his life marked a significant turning point as he began to actively explore and practice his faith.
The announcement of the memoir comes amid Vance's rising popularity as one of the early frontrunners in the race for the 2028 presidential nomination to succeed President Donald Trump. In American politics, it is common practice to publish memoirs ahead of presidential campaigns. Other potential candidates from the Democratic Party who have recently released or announced their books include former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.
Vance's emphasis on faith indicates that religion plays an increasingly important role in his political identity. His conversion to Catholicism has significantly influenced his stance on critical issues such as abortion and family policy. In the past, Vance justified the White House's deportation policy through his interpretation of Catholicism, using the concept of ordo amoris – 'the order of love' – to prioritize obligations to fellow citizens over those to foreigners, as reported by The Guardian.
The release of the memoir 'Communion' follows the success of Vance's first book, 'Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis,' published in 2016. In this book, the author recounts his childhood in rural Ohio and his journey from a troubled family background to Yale Law School. The book became a bestseller, remaining on The New York Times list for over 200 weeks and selling more than five million copies worldwide. It was later adapted into a film directed by Ron Howard.
It is also noteworthy that former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has indicated that she may run for the presidency again in 2028.
