Easter at St. Sophia: A Grand Celebration in the Heart of Kyiv with Ancient Rituals, Songs, and Dances

On April 12, the National Reserve 'St. Sophia of Kyiv' will host a grand festive event titled 'Easter at St. Sophia,' featuring traditional rituals, singing, and dancing, inviting all to partake in the celebration.

On April 12, from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM, the National Reserve 'St. Sophia of Kyiv' will be transformed into a vibrant celebration for 'Easter at St. Sophia.' This event is organized in collaboration with the National Center of Folk Culture 'Ivan Honchar Museum,' with support from the Zagoriy Foundation and the 'Vytoki' project. The organizers are encouraging everyone to join in the festivities, urging attendees to 'Prepare your finest attire, bake Easter cakes, and become co-creators of Easter at St. Sophia. Let us create a day filled with universal love, the power of light, hope for a bountiful harvest, health, and victory.'

This year, 'St. Sophia of Kyiv' will again serve as a space for a communal Easter celebration for the third time, where Ukrainian tradition is not merely a museum artifact but a living practice of memory, unity, and continuity. The air will be filled with spring songs, round dances, canticles, psalms, spiritual hymns, choral music, and the ringing of bells, all echoing within a space that has preserved a thousand years of Ukrainian history. The program promises around 50 ancient Easter songs, springtime games, and round dances that have been revived and returned to live performance by youth and children.

Throughout the day, the sounds of Ukrainian tradition will resonate in the reserve, performed by kobzars and lirnyks (traditional Ukrainian musicians). The Easter bell from the St. Sophia bell tower will bless Kyiv and Ukraine, creating an atmosphere of festivity and unity. One of the central features of the event will be a communal feast in the garden of the reserve, serving as a space for meeting, unity, and shared celebration.

For children and families, there will be play and educational spaces, Easter games, and interactive formats to introduce them to Ukrainian culture, as well as an educational area called 'Know Your Ukraine.' A folk art fair will also take place at the event, where artisans will showcase handcrafted Ukrainian traditions in their living continuation. The day's program includes charitable workshops and activities for families, the 'Light of Easter' program featuring kobzar and lirnyk traditions, and uplifting songs in the space of St. Sophia Cathedral.

Additionally, a large communal Easter action is planned, featuring round dances, crooked dances, and games from various regions of Ukraine. Participants will have the opportunity to join a procession singing around St. Sophia Cathedral, as well as enjoy traditional dances outdoors to conclude the festive day.

A special part of the celebration will include initiatives for remembrance and support for the Ukrainian military, as well as a charity collection for the Blood Center of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The organizers emphasize that the tradition of communal Easter celebrations near churches was widespread in most regions of Ukraine, but it was largely lost during the 20th century due to bans, repression, and historical trials.

Today, 'Easter at St. Sophia' not only revives individual elements of the ritual but also the experience of communal presence, singing, joy, and light as an essential part of Ukrainian cultural memory. The event conceptualizes Easter not merely as a religious or calendar holiday but as a profound cultural experience that intertwines faith, community, beauty, memory, and the continuity of Ukrainian tradition. In times of war, it also serves as a reminder that culture remains a space of inner support, unity, and renewal.
