Easter in Rome: Hundreds of Ukrainians Pray for Victory and Peace at St. Sophia Cathedral

In a heartfelt gathering at St. Sophia Cathedral in Rome, hundreds of Ukrainians came together to pray for victory and peace in Ukraine during the Easter celebrations.

The Easter celebrations at St. Sophia Cathedral in Rome saw hundreds of Ukrainians uniting in prayer for victory and peace in their homeland. According to a report by the Ukrinform news agency, the event was highlighted on the cathedral's Facebook page.

The Paschal services commenced on Saturday evening with the Easter Vigil, led by Bishop Hryhoriy Komar, the Apostolic Administrator of the Exarchate for Ukrainian Catholics in Italy. The ceremony began with a procession around the sanctuary, after which the cathedral's vice-rector, Father Dmytro Kudin, joyfully proclaimed the message: 'Christ is Risen!'

On Sunday morning, the festive Divine Liturgy was celebrated by the rector of the pro-cathedral, Father Marko-Yaroslav Semegen, who served alongside both Ukrainian and foreign clergy. During his sermon, Father Marko-Yaroslav read the Easter message from the Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, His Beatitude Sviatoslav. In his address, the church leader drew parallels between the journey of the Myrrh-Bearing Women and the experiences of modern Ukrainian women who today visit the graves of fallen heroes and innocent victims of war.

'We believe in the resurrected Savior! We believe that to all our deceased, Christ, who today triumphantly rises from the grave, grants life and resurrection,' stated the church leader. This message served as a vital reminder of the hope and faith that sustain Ukrainians during these challenging times.

Addressing the congregation, Rector Father Marko-Yaroslav emphasized that the Resurrection is not merely a tradition but a moment of redemption. He urged Ukrainians to build their lives on 'the logic of the Gospel,' which knows no defeat, and to seek inner healing from the wounds inflicted by war. 'May the Lord heal the wounds inflicted upon you by someone or something... May resentment and malice today not overshadow the good, the divine image within our souls,' noted Father Marko-Yaroslav Semegen.

The pastor expressed heartfelt gratitude to the clergy, nuns, choir, and numerous volunteers and staff of 'St. Sophia' who facilitated the celebration. Special thanks were extended to Monsignor Romanus Mbene, a representative of the Apostolic Almoner (the Papal Charities), for his support and participation in the festive activities.

The celebrations concluded with the traditional blessing of Easter foods, a communal singing of the 'Mnohaya Lita' (Many Years), and a sincere prayer for a just peace and victory for Ukraine. These moments became symbols of unity and hope for the Ukrainian community, which, despite hardships, continues to maintain faith in a brighter future.

It is worth noting that in Lublin, Poland, representatives of the Ukrainian consulate, along with a large Ukrainian community, also participated in the festive Easter service, underscoring the solidarity of Ukrainians around the world during this significant holiday.
