The Toll of Landmines in Ukraine: Over 1,400 Casualties in Four Years of War, Including 147 Children

As of April 1, 2026, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine has resulted in over 1,431 casualties due to enemy landmines and unexploded ordnance, with 147 of the victims being children. The data highlights the severe impact of the war on the civilian population.

According to information provided by the press service of the Main Department of Mine Action, Civil Defense, and Environmental Safety, the number of casualties in Ukraine resulting from hostile landmines and unexploded remnants of war has exceeded 1,431 individuals as of April 1, 2026. Among the casualties, there are 147 children and 1,284 adults.

This data underscores the serious consequences that the war has inflicted on the civilian population. The highest number of casualties has been recorded among farmers, totaling 260 individuals, followed by the unemployed, with 165 affected. Pensioners have also suffered significant losses, with 141 individuals impacted by explosive devices. Additionally, 144 critical infrastructure workers, 91 drivers, and 139 students have also fallen victim to this tragedy.

The press service emphasized that Ukrainian law enforcement agencies are actively investigating incidents of civilian detonation by Russian landmines. They are opening criminal proceedings regarding violations of the rules and customs of warfare by the Russian Federation in each individual case. This reflects the seriousness of the situation and the necessity of holding those responsible accountable.

To improve the situation and ensure the safety of the population, the Ukrainian government has created a relevant database and an interactive map that assists state and humanitarian organizations in informing citizens about the risks associated with explosive devices. These tools also facilitate the provision of assistance to those injured by mine-related injuries, which is critically important under the current circumstances.

Furthermore, it is worth noting that the demining units of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine are actively working to clear affected areas. In March 2026, they managed to clear 876 hectares, marking a significant step in combating the dangers posed by landmines and explosive remnants.

This situation in Ukraine raises concerns not only domestically but also on the international stage. Many countries and organizations have expressed support for Ukraine in its struggle against the consequences of war and are providing humanitarian aid. However, despite all efforts, the issue of mine danger remains pressing and requires ongoing attention and action from both the state and the international community.

In light of these events, it is crucial for Ukrainians to be aware of the dangers associated with explosive devices and to adhere to all safety recommendations. This can save lives and prevent further tragic incidents.
