Large-Scale Drone Theft Scheme Exposed in Ukraine, Valued Over $370,000 in 'Army of Drones' Program

On April 1, the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine announced the uncovering of a large-scale scheme involving the theft and resale of drones supplied to the military under the 'Army of Drones' program, resulting in significant financial losses.

On Wednesday, April 1, the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine revealed the exposure of a large-scale scheme that involved the theft and resale of drones supplied to the military as part of the 'Army of Drones' initiative. According to the investigation, the suspects include a unit commander and two civilian accomplices who organized this criminal activity, leading to losses exceeding 15.2 million hryvnias (approximately $370,000).

The investigation uncovered that from November 2024 to March 2026, the suspects allegedly orchestrated the write-off of drones that were actively used in combat units before reselling them. The scheme operated across several regions, including Donetsk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipropetrovsk.

Overall, the investigation revealed that more than 340 drones of various types were unlawfully appropriated and sold through online platforms, utilizing anonymous accounts. Authorities noted that the proceeds from this scheme were likely used to acquire real estate, vehicles, and jewelry.

Furthermore, investigators reported that the commander may have illegally acquired assets worth over 10.7 million hryvnias (approximately $260,000), significantly exceeding his declared income. During searches, law enforcement seized drones and components, cash amounting to 1.48 million hryvnias, as well as several vehicles, including Toyota Land Cruiser and Mercedes-Benz models, along with documents related to property ownership.

The suspects have been charged with the appropriation of military property during wartime, which constitutes a serious criminal offense under Ukrainian law. The commander is also facing additional charges of illegal enrichment.

All suspects have been placed in custody pending trial as investigators continue to identify other individuals who may be involved in this scheme. This case highlights the severity of corruption and abuse issues within the military sector, especially in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
