On April 2, 2023, Ukraine celebrates Palm Sunday, an important holiday in the Christian tradition. According to Ukrinform, this holiday is among the twelve major events in the church calendar and is observed on the sixth Sunday of Lent, exactly one week before Easter. Palm Sunday, also known as the Feast of the Lord's Entrance into Jerusalem, has been celebrated since the early Church, with the first known references dating back to the 3rd century.
According to church traditions, it was on this day that Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey. This event coincided with the Jewish festival of Passover, drawing numerous people to the city. At that time, Judea was one of the provinces of the Roman Empire, and its inhabitants believed that someone would come to free them from Roman rule. The townspeople and pilgrims joyfully welcomed Jesus, laying palm branches on the road before Him, knowing that just the day before, He had raised the dead Lazarus, who had been in the tomb for three days. Thus, the Jews greeted Jesus as their King.
In Ukraine, it is traditional for people to go to churches in the morning to have willow branches blessed. The blessed willow branches symbolize the palm branches that welcomed Jesus in Jerusalem. As noted by the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, the blessing of the green branches signifies Christ's victory over death and honors the great voluntary sacrifice He made for our salvation.
Today marks the end of the sixth and final week of the Holy Forty Days, and the beginning of Holy Week—a special period that recalls the most significant events in the matter of our salvation. This week is a time of deep reflection and prayer for believers.
On the eve of Palm Sunday, a vigil is held, and on the day of the holiday, a Divine Liturgy is conducted according to the rite of Saint John Chrysostom. On this day, clergy wear festive green vestments, symbolizing joy and hope. At the conclusion of the solemn service on the Feast of the Lord's Entrance into Jerusalem, the clergy sprinkle all present and the willow branches brought to the church with blessed water.
Moreover, Palm Sunday is not only a religious holiday but also an important cultural phenomenon in Ukraine that unites people around shared traditions and values. This holiday is celebrated in many regions of the country and serves as a symbol of hope, faith, and renewal.
