The Presidential Office Responds to Poroshenko's Statements: More Emotion Than Facts
In a recent commentary, Iryna Mudra, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, expressed her views on former President Petro Poroshenko's recent statements, asserting that they contain more emotion than substantiated facts.
In a commentary for Ukrinform, Iryna Mudra, the Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, shared her perspective on the recent statements made by Petro Poroshenko. She noted that these statements seem to be more driven by emotion than by grounded facts. Mudra emphasized that the author of these claims evidently has experience influencing the judicial system, considering the practices that were prevalent during his presidency.
Mudra reminded the public that between 2014 and 2019, the Ukrainian legal system faced repeated criticism for political influence on the courts and law enforcement agencies. She highlighted that the independence of the judiciary has become one of the key issues in Ukraine's dialogue with international partners, as it is impossible to discuss true democracy and the rule of law without this crucial aspect.
“Today, the state is moving in a different direction — towards clear procedures, the delineation of powers, and the accountability of each authority. Judicial decisions are made in the courtroom, not in political statements,” she stressed, underlining the importance of adhering to the principles of justice.
The Deputy Head of the Office of the President also pointed out that such public accusations, which lack any evidentiary basis, appear more as an attempt to shape an information backdrop around the process rather than a legal position. She emphasized that the principle of judicial independence operates in Ukraine, which excludes any informal influence or political pressure on the consideration of specific cases.
As previously reported, on February 12, 2025, President Volodymyr Zelensky enacted a decision by the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) to impose personal sanctions against a number of individuals, including notable figures such as Ihor Kolomoyskyi, Hennadiy Boholyubov, Kostiantyn Zhevaho, Petro Poroshenko, and Viktor Medvedchuk.
These sanctions entail a range of restrictions, including the deprivation of state awards from Ukraine, asset freezes, limitations on trade operations, as well as partial or complete cessation of resource transit, flights, and transportation across the territory of Ukraine. It is important to note that the sanctions are applied indefinitely.
On April 17, 2025, the Administrative Cassation Court as part of the Supreme Court began hearing the lawsuit filed by the fifth president, Petro Poroshenko, regarding the imposition of NSDC sanctions against him. However, on April 3 of the same year, the hearing was postponed indefinitely due to the illness of one of the judges, which sparked outrage from Poroshenko, who labeled the session as disrupted and accused Iryna Mudra of being responsible for it.
This situation underscores the tension between former and current political elites in Ukraine, as well as the importance of upholding the principles of justice and judicial independence in the face of contemporary challenges.
