Italy Plans to Create State Mechanism for Transferring Old Fishing Nets to Ukraine for Drone Protection
Italy is set to establish a new state mechanism that will allow the transfer of old fishing nets to Ukraine, which can be utilized for protection against drones. This initiative was announced by Dmitry Shchukin, president of the Network of Associations for Ukraine (NAU), during the presentation of the proposal.
Italy is preparing to implement a new state mechanism aimed at transferring old fishing nets to Ukraine, which can be repurposed for protection against drone attacks. This information was disclosed by Dmitry Shchukin, president of the Network of Associations for Ukraine (NAU), during the official presentation of the initiative.
Shchukin emphasized that this legislative proposal serves as a vivid example of how a simple solution can save lives. In Ukraine, fishing nets are already actively used to protect civilians from drone assaults, and the new Italian initiative aims to create a mechanism that encourages businesses to donate obsolete nets instead of disposing of them. If passed, this bill could establish an important precedent for other European countries, initiating a new practice of utilizing civilian resources for the protection of the population.
The author of the bill is Senator Ivan Scalfarotto, who has garnered support from other Italian politicians, including Senator Silvia Fregolent, who also participated in the event. It was noted during the presentation that this legislative proposal exemplifies a straightforward yet effective solution that could significantly enhance Ukraine's resilience against drone attacks.
Participants at the event highlighted that similar practices already exist, but the demand for such measures remains exceedingly high, particularly in cities located near the front lines. Anna Gordon, president of the Italian-Ukrainian Association UaMI (Associazione dei giovani italo-ucraini in Italia), stressed the importance of this initiative for the protection of civilians during the discussion.
Gordon also showcased debris from a Shahed drone that had fallen near her family home, serving as a tangible example of the real threats that Ukrainian families face daily. This moment elicited a lively reaction among those present and underscored the urgent need for measures to ensure civilian safety.
Event participants emphasized that this initiative demonstrates how Italy's national interests can align with solidarity towards Ukraine, expressing hopes for further support and practical implementation of this legislative proposal.
It is worth noting that earlier, French fishermen from the Brittany region had transferred approximately 280 kilometers of fishing nets to Ukraine, which serve as barriers to protect military personnel and civilians from Russian drones. This step highlights the international support for Ukraine in its fight against aggression.
