The Ukrainian government has approved the allocation of ₴726.8 million for the connection of 75 existing cogeneration installations, which collectively have an electrical capacity of nearly 100 MW and thermal capacity of 107 MW.
The government of Ukraine has made a significant financial commitment by approving the allocation of ₴726.8 million for the connection of 75 existing cogeneration installations. These installations boast a total electrical capacity of nearly 100 megawatts (MW) and a thermal capacity of 107 MW. This announcement was made by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko via her Telegram channel, as reported by Ukrinform.
The funds will be utilized to connect cogeneration installations that have previously been engaged by the regions, particularly with the support of international partners. The primary objective of this initiative is to ensure the stable operation of critical infrastructure facilities, which is especially crucial in light of the current challenges facing the country.
According to information provided by Svyrydenko, of the allocated funds, ₴307.7 million will be directed towards the installation and connection of 20 cogeneration units in the Kharkiv region, 20 in Chernihiv, 19 in Khmelnytskyi, 7 in Lviv, 4 in Donetsk, 3 in Vinnytsia, and one unit each in Sumy and Ternopil regions. Additionally, communities will receive another ₴419.1 million for the connection of modular boiler houses.
It has also been noted that the allocated funds will facilitate the completion of decentralization efforts in the heating supply system in Mykolaiv, marking an important step in enhancing the city's energy infrastructure.
Yulia Svyrydenko emphasized that a key task for regional military administrations (OVAs) and communities is to put this equipment into operation by October 1. She urged the development of project documentation, completion of construction and installation works, preparation of sites, and ensuring connection to the networks.
This initiative is part of a broader government strategy aimed at strengthening the country’s energy security, particularly in the context of ongoing war and increasing challenges in the energy sector. Notably, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development recently approved an emergency grant of €20 million for the installation of container cogeneration units in Kyiv. Furthermore, the European Union is also providing an additional technical assistance grant of €2.07 million to improve heating supply in the capital.
These initiatives reflect the active support of Ukraine's international partners in its quest for energy independence and stability amid the challenging situation in the country. The government continues to work on attracting investments and resources for the modernization of the energy infrastructure, which is critically important for the recovery and development of Ukrainian regions.
