Umerov on the Status of the Mejlis: An Important Signal Regarding Crimea, Indigenous Peoples' Rights, and Future Deoccupation

On October 19, Rustem Umerov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, made a significant announcement regarding a new decree by President Volodymyr Zelensky that affirms the legal status of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people.

Today, October 19, Rustem Umerov, the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, made an important statement on his Telegram channel, announcing a new decree from President Volodymyr Zelensky. The decree pertains to the formal recognition of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people as a representative body, marking a crucial step in addressing the rights of indigenous peoples and the deoccupation of Crimea.

Umerov noted that President Zelensky has signed a decree instructing the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to urgently regulate this matter. According to the new decision, the Cabinet has established the legal status of the Mejlis as the representative body of the Crimean Tatar people. This decision is of great significance as it formalizes the role of the Mejlis at the level of state policy and ensures its participation in decision-making processes concerning the rights, culture, education, and development of the Crimean Tatar people.

"This creates a clear mechanism for interaction between the state and the representative body of the indigenous people. It also serves as an important signal regarding Ukraine's consistent position on the issue of Crimea, the rights of indigenous peoples, and future deoccupation," emphasized Umerov, pointing out that decisions made by executive authorities on these matters will now take into account the position of the Mejlis.

It is worth noting that Decree No. 293/2026, titled 'On Certain Issues of Ensuring the Rights of the Crimean Tatar People,' was published on the official website of the President of Ukraine. This decision came as a result of prolonged efforts aimed at protecting the rights of the Crimean Tatar people, who have faced various forms of discrimination and oppression for many years.

The Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, established in 1991, is the only supreme authorized representative-executive body of this people. However, until now, it lacked the appropriate legal status, which limited its capabilities in representing the interests of the Crimean Tatar people. Now, following the resolution of this legal issue, the Mejlis will be able to actively participate in the development of state programs concerning the Crimean Tatar people, as well as represent their interests at an official level.

This decision is an important step not only for the Crimean Tatar people but also for all of Ukraine, as it underscores the state's commitment to ensuring the rights of indigenous peoples. It also demonstrates Ukraine's aspiration for the deoccupation of Crimea and the restoration of justice for all its residents.

In light of these developments, it is crucial for society and the international community to support Ukraine's efforts in defending the rights of the Crimean Tatar people and to contribute to the restoration of justice in Crimea.
