Ukrainian Rocket Manufacturer Fire Point Plans to Create Alternative to Patriot by 2027 and Considers Launching Satellites

The Ukrainian defense company Fire Point is actively working on an economical air defense system aimed at providing a potential domestic alternative to the American Patriot missile defense system. According to a senior executive at the company, the ambitious plan includes intercepting the first ballistic missile by the year 2027.

Denys Shtylerman, co-founder and chief designer of Fire Point, emphasized that the primary goal of this system is to reduce the cost of intercepting ballistic missiles to less than one million dollars. "If we manage to decrease this cost to below one million, it will become... a revolutionary solution in the field of air defense," he stated, highlighting the significant impact such a development could have on national and regional security.

Currently, Ukraine and many other Western-oriented countries rely heavily on the Patriot air defense system to intercept ballistic threats. However, the supply of this system has become increasingly limited due to its deployment in multiple conflict zones around the world. Additionally, the SAMP/T system, developed jointly by Italy and France, is also produced in restricted quantities, further complicating the air defense landscape.

Shtylerman revealed that Fire Point is in discussions with European partners regarding the development of essential components, such as radar systems, guidance systems, and communication technologies, although he refrained from naming specific companies involved in these negotiations. He added that the company plans to base its new air defense system on its existing FP-7 rocket platform, which has already shown promise in various applications.

Fire Point was established in the wake of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and has since been producing long-range drones and cruise missiles that are utilized to target Russian military infrastructure. Their cruise missile, known as the FP5 or Flamingo, has reportedly been employed in strikes against targets located up to 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) deep within Russia, according to information from Reuters.

In addition to its cruise missile capabilities, the company is also developing two ballistic missiles, including the FP-7, which boasts a range of approximately 300 kilometers (186 miles), and the FP-9, designed to carry a warhead weighing 800 kilograms over a distance of up to 850 kilometers (528 miles). These developments underscore Fire Point's commitment to enhancing Ukraine's defense capabilities amidst ongoing military challenges.

The strategic importance of developing an indigenous air defense system cannot be overstated, especially in light of the current geopolitical climate. As nations around the world continue to bolster their military capabilities, Ukraine's efforts to innovate and create homegrown solutions will play a crucial role in its defense strategy.
