Ukrainian Polar Researchers Showcase Rare White Rainbow
The National Antarctic Scientific Center has shared stunning photographs on Facebook capturing a unique natural phenomenon—a white rainbow. These images, taken by Ukrainian polar researchers, reveal that rainbows can appear not only in vibrant colors but also in a pure white form.
The National Antarctic Scientific Center has recently published captivating photographs on its Facebook page, showcasing a rare natural phenomenon known as a white rainbow. These striking images, captured by Ukrainian polar researchers, demonstrate that rainbows can exist not only in a spectrum of colors but also in a completely white appearance. Scientists explain that this phenomenon is linked to the size of the water droplets through which light is refracted and scattered, with the droplets in this case being exceptionally small.
It is noted that in larger water droplets, white light is divided into various colors of the visible spectrum. Each beam of light travels along its own trajectory without mixing with others, resulting in the vibrant hues typically associated with rainbows. However, when the droplets are smaller, the light beams begin to mix, leading to a pronounced diffraction effect. As a result, the colors become less distinct, eventually fading to the point of forming a white rainbow.
Interestingly, the outer edge of a white rainbow can sometimes exhibit a slight orange tint, while the lower part may be tinged with purple. This adds a unique charm to the phenomenon, making it even more impressive for observers.
Researchers also point out that white rainbows are often referred to as fogbows, as they occur when sunlight illuminates a thin fog composed of microscopic water droplets. Although these droplets are small, they can create such remarkable optical effects that capture the attention of both scientists and nature enthusiasts alike.
Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that Ukrainian scientists have recently installed new instruments to measure air quality in Antarctica and the World Ocean. This underscores the active engagement of Ukrainian researchers in this remote part of the world, where they continue to study ecological changes and their impact on the environment.
