Ukrainian Partisans Claim Sabotage of Railway Line in Russia's Belgorod Region

A Ukrainian-supported partisan group, Atesh, has claimed responsibility for sabotaging a railway line in Russia's Belgorod region, disrupting the transportation of military cargo towards Kupiansk.

The partisan group Atesh announced via Telegram on April 8 that it had successfully executed a sabotage operation on a railway line in Russia's Belgorod region. This act reportedly disrupted the transportation of military supplies heading towards Kupiansk, a critical area in the ongoing conflict. Atesh operatives simultaneously destroyed two transformer cabinets along the railway between Stary Oskol and Urazov, causing logistical delays in the supply of 'ammunition, equipment, and food' for Russian troops stationed near the front lines in the Kharkiv region.

According to the statement from the partisans, the disruption has led to significant losses in personnel and equipment for Russian military units. 'As a direct consequence of their supply being interrupted at a critical moment, these units have suffered considerable losses,' the partisans added. However, the independent news outlet Kyiv Independent was unable to immediately verify these claims. The extent of the damage or the seriousness of the disruptions caused by the sabotage remains unclear.

Atesh has been known for regularly conducting sabotage attacks within Russia and on occupied territories of Ukraine, disrupting Russian military operations. For instance, on March 17, Atesh claimed that its operatives, in coordination with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, set fire to three cellular towers equipped with electronic warfare antennas. This operation allegedly allowed Ukrainian drones to penetrate enemy defenses and strike an aircraft repair plant in Stara Rus.

The General Staff of Ukraine appeared to corroborate these claims, reporting that facilities at the 123rd Aircraft Repair Plant in Stara Rus were hit, including a hangar used for servicing Il-76 and L-410 aircraft. Over the past year, Atesh agents have claimed to have successfully sabotaged key railway hubs, locomotives, and even a Russian air defense factory, among other targets. These actions highlight the ongoing efforts by Ukrainian partisans to undermine Russian military capabilities in the region.
