Ukrainian Air Defense Intercepts Nearly 90% of Russian Drones and Missiles in March
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has released remarkable statistics highlighting the effectiveness of the country's air defense system in March 2023, revealing that nearly 90% of hostile drones and missiles were intercepted.
In a significant development, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has disclosed impressive results regarding the operations of the Ukrainian air defense forces (PPO) during March 2023. According to data provided by Ukrinform, Ukrainian forces successfully intercepted almost 90% of enemy drones and missiles, indicating substantial progress in safeguarding the nation's airspace.
Throughout the past month, Russian military forces continued their strategy of exhausting Ukrainian air defenses by launching attacks in waves, combining missile strikes and drone assaults. Daily reports from the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine indicated that approximately 6,600 targets were recorded attacking Ukraine in March, an increase from 5,300 targets in February.
The interception efficiency of drones and missiles in March reached an impressive 89.9%. According to the defense ministry, during the month, 5,935 enemy drones and missiles were neutralized. Specifically, there were 6,463 launches of Shahed-type drones and others, with 5,833 units intercepted, resulting in an efficiency rate of 90.25%. Regarding missiles, out of 138 launched, 102 were intercepted, which amounts to nearly 74%.
The highest intensity of enemy drone strikes was recorded on March 24, when nearly 1,000 drones were launched in a single day. Despite the unprecedented number of attacks, Ukrainian forces managed to destroy or land 94.6% of aerial targets. This attack marked the largest scale of assaults since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Additionally, on March 14, the largest missile attack occurred, during which the enemy launched 68 missiles, of which 58 were intercepted by Ukrainian defenders. On the same day, Russian forces attacked with 430 drones, with over 400 units successfully intercepted.
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine emphasized that the war plan aims to detect 100% of aerial threats in real-time and intercept at least 95% of missiles and drones. 'Approaching this indicator has become possible due to the coordinated efforts of aviation, various air defense systems, and electronic warfare (EW) capabilities. This allows not only for the physical destruction of targets but also for their 'location loss,' conserving the scarce stock of interceptor missiles,' the defense ministry underscored.
It is noteworthy that the Ukrainian air defense forces have neutralized 26 Russian missiles and 515 drones of various types during the previous period. These figures reflect a high level of training and effectiveness of Ukrainian forces in countering aggression from Russia.
