In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), large-scale workshops on egg decorating were organized by the Ukrainian Women's Initiative in the UAE (UWI). According to information from Ukrinform, these events gathered more than 50 participants, including both adults and children, which indicates a rising interest in Ukrainian traditions among different age groups.
The event organizers noted that it was particularly gratifying to see a growing interest in egg decorating among men, which helps to break down traditional gender stereotypes. This has become an important step in promoting Ukrainian culture, as the decorated egg, or pysanka, serves as a symbol that unites people regardless of their gender.
In addition to Ukrainians, foreign guests also joined in the egg decorating, seeing this art form as an opportunity to familiarize themselves with Ukrainian culture and to use the pysanka as a tool of 'soft power'. This has become a significant element of cultural exchange, contributing to the strengthening of international ties.
The hosting of these events took place against the backdrop of a complex security context in the UAE. The UWI emphasized that their activities continue despite the constant threats posed by Iran, which has been carrying out attacks on Emirati territory. This reflects the resilience and determination of the Ukrainian community in the UAE, which strives to preserve its cultural traditions.
“In difficult times, it is especially important to be together and find strength in the culture that unites us. For the participants, this has become a special moment of inner peace and unity,” the organization stated. These words highlight the importance of cultural events during times of crisis, when the community seeks support and inspiration.
The Ukrainian Women's Initiative has been conducting egg decorating workshops for the fourth consecutive year. In addition to public events, on April 7, the UWI artisans traditionally gathered in a small circle to create their own pysankas, filled with symbols of faith and life. This demonstrates the deep roots of Ukrainian traditions, which continue to thrive even beyond their homeland.
The organization also added that each ornament and color on the pysankas embodies wishes for peace and the continuity of the Ukrainian lineage, passed down from generation to generation. This is particularly important for Ukrainians who are far from home, as such traditions help maintain a connection to their native culture.
It is worth noting that ahead of Easter, representatives of the Ukrainian community in India also gathered in the capital city, New Delhi, to recreate one of the oldest national traditions – egg decorating. This event brought together not only Ukrainians but also representatives of foreign media, underscoring the importance of cultural dialogue in the modern world.
