Ukraine Reduces Electricity Imports by 25% in March - ExPro

According to a report by the consulting company ExPro, Ukraine reduced its electricity imports by 25% in March 2026, amounting to 942 thousand MWh. This significant decrease in import volumes occurred amidst changes in the country's energy market.

In March 2026, Ukraine experienced a notable reduction in its electricity imports, which fell by 25%, translating to a total of 942 thousand megawatt-hours (MWh). This substantial decline in import volumes reflects the ongoing transformations within the country's energy market, as reported by the consulting firm ExPro.

Hungary continues to dominate Ukraine's electricity imports, accounting for 48% of the total volume. Romania follows in second place with a 20% share. This reliance on neighboring countries highlights Ukraine's ongoing dependency on external sources to meet its energy needs.

It is important to note that in March, Ukraine also engaged in electricity exports, which totaled 30.2 thousand MWh. Of this amount, 47.5% was supplied to Moldova. This marked the first instance of electricity exports from Ukraine since a prolonged hiatus that began on November 11, 2025.

The data indicates that Ukraine's energy sector is continuing to adapt to the new conditions brought about by changes in the electricity market. Specifically, in February 2026, there was a significant increase in electricity imports compared to January, with imports reaching 1.26 million MWh, an increase of 41%. However, during that same period, no electricity exports were conducted at all.

The reduction in electricity imports in March may be linked to improvements in domestic production and an overall stabilization of the energy situation in the country. This trend could suggest that Ukraine is gradually restoring its energy capabilities following the challenging times it has faced in previous years.

Experts believe that the future development of Ukraine's energy sector will depend on various factors, including international politics, investments in energy infrastructure, and the availability of alternative energy sources. It is crucial for the country to continue working towards energy independence and ensuring stable electricity supplies for both the population and industry.

It is worth recalling that Ukraine's energy sector has undergone significant changes in recent years, and the country is actively seeking new opportunities for development and integration into the European energy market.
