Ukraine Responds Calmly to Vance's Statements on Election Interference - Foreign Ministry

On April 8, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Georgiy Tikhiy addressed comments made by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance regarding potential interference by Ukrainian intelligence in elections in the United States and Hungary, emphasizing a measured response.

During a briefing on April 8, Georgiy Tikhiy, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, commented on the statements made by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance concerning possible interference by Ukrainian intelligence agencies in elections in both the United States and Hungary. Tikhiy noted that the Ukrainian side does not attribute excessive emotional weight to these claims and urges everyone to carefully review the full version of the press conference where these remarks were made.

Tikhiy pointed out that during the press conference held in Budapest, which featured both Vance and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, journalists attempted to provoke the Vice President into making sharp statements. 'I urge everyone to listen to the entire press conference where these hints from Vance regarding Ukraine's interference in the elections in the U.S. and Hungary were voiced, and it will become clear that the journalists present there—without passing judgment on their tone—repeatedly tried to provoke the U.S. Vice President into various sharp statements,' said the Foreign Ministry spokesperson.

He further emphasized that Vance responded neutrally to all attempts by journalists to provoke him. 'As for the phrase that was mentioned, we understand that this occurred within the framework of the electoral campaign. We do not attribute any overly emotional or sharp connotation to what was said… We do not exaggerate the significance of this statement,' Tikhiy noted.

The Foreign Ministry spokesperson reiterated his call for anyone interested to watch the full version of the press conference, stating that 'it will then become obvious what the U.S. Vice President's attitude is, rather than based on such a yanked small piece.' This reflects Ukraine's desire to maintain objectivity and calm in response to external statements, even if they raise concerns.

It is important to recall that during the joint press conference in Budapest, J.D. Vance claimed that there are 'elements' within Ukrainian intelligence agencies attempting to interfere in elections in both the U.S. and Hungary. These remarks have sparked widespread media and political reactions; however, the Ukrainian side has chosen not to succumb to emotional responses and to maintain composure in its comments.

Notably, the statements from Viktor Orban and J.D. Vance came against the backdrop of heightened political activity in both countries, which could impact international relations and security in the region. Ukraine hopes for constructive dialogue with the U.S. and other partners, despite such statements that may be perceived as provocative.
