Ukraine Requests Easter Ceasefire from U.S., Uncertainty Remains on Message Delivery to Russia, Says Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Thursday that Ukraine has officially requested the United States to facilitate an Easter ceasefire, though it remains unclear if the U.S. will be able to convey this message to Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Thursday during a meeting with journalists that Ukraine has officially submitted a request to the United States regarding the possibility of declaring an Easter ceasefire. However, he noted that it is currently unknown whether the American side will be able to relay this message to the Russian Federation.

Zelensky emphasized that the Ukrainian proposal for a ceasefire during Easter remains in effect, despite the fact that, according to the president, the Russian side has not shown readiness to take such a step. "We have all seen their response in the media: they (the Russians – IF-U) seem to be unprepared for this. I do not know how serious this response is," he commented on Moscow's reaction to the Ukrainian initiative.

The president also expressed doubts about the American side's ability to convey Ukraine's request for a ceasefire to the Russian leadership. "We have passed our request to the American side. I do not know if they will have the opportunity to pass their message to the 'Russians'. We will see," Zelensky added, highlighting the importance of the Easter holiday for the Ukrainian people.

The context for this request comes amid escalating military actions in eastern Ukraine, where fighting continues between Ukrainian forces and Russian occupiers. Easter, which will be celebrated on April 16 this year, is a significant religious holiday for Ukrainians, and many people hope to spend it in peace.

It is worth noting that in previous years, similar initiatives for ceasefires during major religious holidays have received support from the international community. However, the reality of military actions often raises doubts about the possibility of achieving peace, especially in conditions where one side shows no willingness to compromise.

Thus, Ukraine's request for an Easter ceasefire represents another step towards seeking a peaceful resolution to the conflict, but its implementation will depend on the response from Russia and the international community. The Ukrainian president continues to call for dialogue and cooperation with partners, hoping for a positive outcome for the Ukrainian people.
