On Tuesday, during a broadcast on franceinfo, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed confidence that Ukraine will gain access to European Union funds, even if the final approval of a €90 billion loan is delayed. She emphasized that the question is not whether the loan will be approved, but rather when it will happen.
Barro highlighted that the potential acceleration of the process depends on the results of the elections in Hungary, which are set to take place on Sunday evening. He noted that if Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban faces defeat, it could positively influence the situation. 'Perhaps. But regardless of the outcome, I know that the European Commission will do everything necessary to ensure that if the procedure is not completed by the end of April, Ukraine will have access to the required funds,' he explained.
Barro also stressed that Europe will continue to support Ukraine's resistance against Russian aggression, as he believes that the situation on the front line directly affects the security of Europe. 'This is a front held by Ukrainians, as for the first time since the beginning of the war, Putin's mercenary army has been halted. Since the beginning of the year, Ukraine has reclaimed more territory than Russia has captured on Ukrainian soil,' detailed the French minister.
He also noted that the Russian Federation, in an attempt to conceal its military failures, continues to shell rear cities, residential areas, and Ukraine's energy infrastructure, even during festive days such as Easter. 'Killing women, killing children - right on Easter, while the President of Ukraine proposed a ceasefire,' Barro added.
It is important to remember that the European Commission is currently finalizing its assessment of Ukraine's financial strategy and preparing a proposal for the EU Council's implementation decision regarding the payment schedule for 2026. This indicates that the European Union remains committed to supporting Ukraine amid ongoing aggression from Russia.
