Gathering in Washington Marks 1500 Days of Full-Scale War

On April 3, a significant gathering took place near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., commemorating the 1500th day of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine. Organized by US Ukrainian Activists, the event drew approximately 1,000 participants who came to show their support for Ukraine's fight for freedom and sovereignty.

The choice of the Lincoln Memorial as the venue was deliberate. This historic monument symbolizes the struggle for freedom and dignity, highlighting the parallels between the historical trials faced by the United States and the contemporary challenges confronting Ukraine. The memorial has become an important site for expressing solidarity and support for the Ukrainian people.

The visual centerpiece of the gathering was a glowing trident, crafted by volunteers from candles on the marble steps of the memorial. This symbol not only embodied deep sorrow for the fallen but also reflected the indomitable spirit of the Ukrainian people in their fight against aggression.

Nadiya Shaporynska, the head of US Ukrainian Activists, emphasized in her speech that the 1500 days of the great war coincided with Good Friday; however, for Ukrainians, suffering is not symbolic but a daily reality. She stated, "Ukraine is not only defending itself. It is defending the values of freedom and democracy—the very foundation of the free world. This war must end not with silence but with justice. Because when aggression is stopped, the world becomes safer."

The event was attended by representatives from various civic organizations and diplomatic circles. Among them were Diana Vidutis, a representative of the Lithuanian American community and the Central Eastern European Coalition, as well as Gia Lomaya, a representative of the American Georgians for Progress organization, along with a group of Georgian activists. Their presence underscored the international support for Ukraine in this difficult struggle.

The organizers expressed gratitude to the Embassy of Ukraine in the U.S. for their participation in the event and for their unwavering solidarity, which is crucial during these challenging times. Participants honored the memory of all victims of the 12-year war waged by Russia against Ukraine with a moment of silence, marking an important moment for everyone present.

The gathering concluded with the performance of the Ukrainian national anthem, which resonated over Washington, reaffirming a shared commitment to the fight for peace and freedom. The candlelight on the steps of the memorial served as a powerful reminder to the world that support for Ukraine will continue until justice is restored.

It is worth noting that in February of this year, representatives of the Ukrainian community, diplomats, and local activists had already gathered at the Lincoln Memorial in the U.S. capital to mark the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion and to reaffirm their steadfast commitment to the fight for freedom.
