A Modern Barrier-Free Public Space to be Created in Central Kyiv

The Kyiv city government is making strides in a project aimed at creating a contemporary barrier-free public space in the square located at the intersection of Taras Shevchenko Boulevard and Khreshchatyk Street. This decision comes as a response to the needs of both residents and visitors to the capital, as the square, despite the dismantling of the Lenin monument in 2013, has yet to transform into a fully functional public area.

Valentin Mondriivskyi, the Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration, emphasized that the square currently does not meet modern accessibility standards. The only way to cross the road in this area is through an underground passage, which unfortunately remains inaccessible to wheelchair users, parents with strollers, and other groups with limited mobility. This situation underscores the urgent need for the revitalization of this territory.

The proposed project includes the establishment of convenient pedestrian routes, the construction of above-ground barrier-free crossings over Taras Shevchenko Boulevard, and the enhancement of green spaces. Additionally, plans involve the installation of modern energy-efficient lighting, street furniture, and other landscaping elements that will make this area more comfortable and attractive for visitors. A key feature of the new space will be a fountain, which will enhance the aesthetic appeal of the square.

Funding for the project will be provided by a patron — the Ukrainian pharmaceutical company Farmak. Representatives from the company noted that this project represents an opportunity for them to contribute to the development of a city with which they have been associated for over 100 years. This highlights the importance of corporate social responsibility in the development of the capital's infrastructure.

The beautification project for this location has undergone several stages of review and approval. The permanent competition commission of the Kyiv City State Administration, which engages investors, supported the initiative to attract extrabudgetary funds for the execution of the works, laying the groundwork for the corresponding order. This reflects the authorities' serious approach to the project's implementation and their desire to create a comfortable environment for all residents and visitors to the capital.

The next step in the project's realization will be the procurement process through the electronic system Prozorro, which will ensure transparency and efficiency in the expenditure of budgetary funds. The project is expected to be completed by next year, providing hope for a swift improvement in the quality of life in central Kyiv.
