Over 50 New Tests Added to Ukraine's Medical Guarantee Program for Patients Suspected of Cancer
The National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSU) has announced a significant expansion of its Medical Guarantee Program, adding more than 50 new laboratory tests for patients suspected of having cancer.
The National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSU) has reported a substantial enhancement of its Medical Guarantee Program, which now includes over 50 new laboratory tests specifically for patients suspected of having oncological diseases. Among these additions are highly specialized genetic, molecular, cytological, and biochemical tests, as well as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with contrast, along with examinations utilizing nuclear medicine techniques.
According to information provided by the NHSU, patients can access these services free of charge under the package titled 'Prevention, Diagnosis, Monitoring, and Treatment in Outpatient Settings' upon referral from a physician. It is crucial for patients experiencing complaints or specific symptoms to first consult their family doctor, therapist, or pediatrician if the patient is a child. The doctor will conduct a preliminary examination, determine the subsequent treatment pathway, and issue an electronic referral for a consultation with a specialist, such as an oncologist, gynecologic oncologist, or surgical oncologist, depending on the symptoms or the location of the pathology.
For instance, in cases where there is suspicion of breast disease, a female patient may be referred to a surgical oncologist or oncologist for further examination. Simultaneously, patients can approach an obstetrician-gynecologist without a referral if there is a suspicion of cervical, ovarian, or breast cancer; a dentist if there is suspicion of a neoplasm in the oral cavity; or a phthisiatrist if there is concern about lung damage.
If a patient is already under a doctor's supervision, a repeat referral is not necessary. After a consultation, the doctor will determine the necessary laboratory and instrumental examinations covered under the package. Among the free services are histological and cytological studies, immunohistochemistry, and the determination of tumor markers such as PSA, CA-125, and CA 15-3, as well as genetic and molecular analyses. For example, in cases of suspected cervical cancer, a Pap test is conducted, and for neoplasms, a biopsy followed by histological analysis is performed to establish a definitive diagnosis.
Moreover, patients can undergo instrumental examinations at no cost, which allow for the localization of tumors and assessment of their spread. The package includes computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), including studies with contrast, as well as nuclear medicine methods.
The NHSU emphasizes that such examinations must not only be accessible but also well-organized. Facilities that operate under a contract with the NHSU are required to plan the volume of examinations daily according to their capacities. According to the terms of the contract, minimum volumes are stipulated: no less than 8 CT scans and 8 MRIs per machine per day. This ensures that patients can undergo examinations without delays and financial burdens.
The package also includes procedures and minimally invasive interventions, such as endoscopic examinations—gastroscopy, colonoscopy, urological, and gynecological procedures—which are also free of charge, including pain relief and anesthesia. Following the establishment of a diagnosis and treatment, patients continue to receive regular consultations, follow-up examinations, and support—all necessary stages are provided at no cost.
Services under the 'Prevention, Diagnosis, Monitoring, and Treatment in Outpatient Settings' package are offered by 1,122 medical institutions across Ukraine. As reported by Ukrinform, 845 million hryvnias have been allocated for early cancer diagnosis within the Medical Guarantee Program.
