Ukraine's Foreign Ministry to Appoint Special Envoy for Prisoners of War

In a significant development, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the creation of a new position dedicated to addressing issues related to prisoners of war, as revealed during a briefing on April 8.

During a briefing held on April 8, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Georgiy Tikhiy, shared important news regarding the establishment of a new position within the ministry's structure. Specifically, he announced that on April 9, a meeting will take place at the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with representatives from public organizations and coordinators of families of the missing and prisoners of war. This meeting will serve as a platform for the introduction of a new ambassador for special assignments, who will be appointed to work in the Department of International Law and International Legal Counteraction to Aggression of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Georgiy Tikhiy emphasized that the new ambassador will hold significant responsibilities, which will include coordinating issues related to military prisoners, exchanges, and the return of Ukrainian citizens who have found themselves in captivity. This initiative aims to ensure more effective interaction between various departments of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as to elevate the level of attention to the issue of prisoners of war on international platforms.

The spokesperson also highlighted that the ministry is in constant communication with the Coordination Headquarters for Prisoners of War, which operates under the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. This reflects a systemic approach to addressing issues related to military prisoners and the necessity for close cooperation between state structures.

It is worth noting that the issue of exchanging military prisoners in Ukraine is extremely relevant and has garnered attention both within Ukraine and beyond its borders. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently expressed hope that another exchange of military prisoners would take place within the next month, underscoring the importance of this topic for the state and society.

According to information provided by representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the new ambassador for special assignments concerning prisoners of war will also be responsible for drawing international attention to the plight of Ukrainian servicemen who have fallen into captivity. This may include participation in international forums, meetings, and other events where issues of human rights, humanitarian law, and the protection of prisoners of war can be discussed.

Thus, the creation of the position of ambassador for prisoners of war is an important step towards improving the situation regarding exchanges and the return of Ukrainian citizens who have become victims of war. It is expected that the new ambassador will be able to effectively coordinate state efforts in this crucial area and provide adequate support to the families of servicemen who find themselves in difficult circumstances.

There is hope that the efforts of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, as well as other state structures, will yield positive results in the matter of returning prisoners of war and the missing, as well as ensuring their rights and safety.
