Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Reveals Practical Steps for Opening Embassy in Syria

During a briefing held on Wednesday, April 8, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Georgiy Tikhiy announced significant developments regarding the restoration of diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Syria.

During a briefing held on Wednesday, April 8, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Georgiy Tikhiy announced significant developments regarding the restoration of diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Syria. He stated that practical steps have already been taken towards the opening of the Ukrainian embassy in the Syrian Arab Republic, marking a substantial advancement in the development of bilateral relations.

Tikhiy reminded attendees of a previously reached agreement between Ukraine and Syria concerning the restoration of embassy operations in Damascus and Kyiv. He noted that back in January 2026, at Ukraine's request, the Syrian side had granted consent to initiate the activities of the Ukrainian embassy in Syria, in accordance with Article 2 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

The Foreign Ministry spokesperson also reported that an order has already been issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which approves a plan of action for organizing the work of the Ukrainian embassy. He emphasized that the implementation of this order has already begun, with work ongoing on the staffing structure of the diplomatic mission, as well as the search for premises for the embassy.

Furthermore, during a recent visit by the President of Ukraine to Syria, the Syrian side confirmed its readiness to commence operations of the Syrian embassy in Kyiv in the near future. This indicates a revitalization of bilateral relations and a willingness to cooperate from both sides.

According to Tikhiy, the mutual opening of diplomatic missions will be an important milestone in the development of relations between Ukraine and Syria. This not only symbolizes the restoration of diplomatic ties but also opens new opportunities for collaboration in various fields such as economy, culture, and security.

It is worth noting that earlier, during negotiations between Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha and Syrian Foreign Minister Assad Hassan al-Shaybani, an agreement was reached regarding the opening of embassies for both countries in Kyiv and Damascus. This event marked a significant step in the restoration of diplomatic relations that had been severed in the past.

Thus, the opening of embassies will not only be a formal step but also an important signal of both countries' intentions to strengthen their relations. This could lead to new opportunities for cooperation and the development of bilateral ties across various sectors.
