Ukrainian Defense Ministry Explains the Role of Canine Units in the Armed Forces
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has clarified the functions of the canine service within the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the State Special Transport Service, highlighting their integral role in modern security operations.
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has published an explanation regarding the functions of the canine service within the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the State Special Transport Service. As noted, canine units have become an indispensable part of the contemporary security system, undertaking a variety of tasks ranging from mine clearance to combating smuggling.
Currently, nearly five hundred four-legged defenders serve within the Ministry of Defense, saving the lives of military personnel on a daily basis. The ministry reported that Ukraine has an extensive network of 89 canine units, with 473 service dogs on active duty.
To perform tasks in the most challenging conditions on the front lines and in the rear, 277 professional dog handlers are training these service dogs. These specialists teach the dogs to carry out various tasks that are critically important for ensuring the safety and effectiveness of military operations.
Specifically, dog handlers prepare service dogs for mine detection activities, which include inspecting roads, critical infrastructure sites, and liberated territories for the presence of explosive devices. Mine detection dogs often uncover dangerous items that remain unnoticed by metal detectors, making them invaluable in demining efforts.
Additionally, canine units perform guard and patrol duties, ensuring the security of military facility perimeters and detecting sabotage groups. They also participate in anti-drug control efforts, which involve searching for narcotics, psychotropic substances, and precursors, a critical aspect of maintaining discipline and legality within the army.
Engineering reconnaissance is another important area of work for dog handlers, who check the terrain during the advancement of units. Thus, service dogs in the army serve not only as guards but also as highly precise tools that significantly enhance the effectiveness of military operations.
The Ministry of Defense emphasized that given the colossal contribution of dog handlers to victory, the department supports the initiative to establish a professional holiday – Canine Handler Day. This decision aims to highlight the status of the profession and recognize the skills of those who transform the natural instincts of animals into effective weapons against the enemy.
Moreover, the ministry stressed the high demand for qualified specialists willing to dedicate their lives to working with service animals. Current vacancies for dog handlers are regularly updated on the specialized recruitment portal.
As reported by Ukrinform, according to Colonel Maksym Kravchuk, head of the communications department of the Support Forces Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, service dogs are actively used for mine clearance in the Kharkiv and Kherson regions. They effectively detect explosive devices in areas heavily contaminated with metal debris, where the use of technical means is limited.
