Man Suspected of Fraud Involving Apartment of Renowned Surgeon Oleksandr Shalimov in Kyiv

Law enforcement agencies in Kyiv have announced the suspicion of a man who allegedly unlawfully seized the apartment of the prominent Ukrainian surgeon Oleksandr Shalimov and sold it. This information was made public on Thursday, April 9, on the official website of the Kyiv police.

In Kyiv, law enforcement agencies have reported the suspicion of a man who, according to police information, unlawfully took possession of the apartment belonging to the family of the renowned Ukrainian surgeon Oleksandr Shalimov and subsequently sold it. This information was disclosed on Thursday, April 9, on the official website of the Kyiv police.

According to the investigation, in 2004, the state provided an apartment to Oleksandr Shalimov in one of the buildings in the Obolon district based on an order. After the death of the distinguished surgeon in 2008, his family continued to reside in this apartment, which, however, remained state-owned.

Authorities discovered that a local resident, upon learning that the ownership of the apartment had not yet been registered, decided to unlawfully take possession of it. To achieve this, the suspect forged a package of documents and submitted them to a private notary, who, unaware of the fraud, registered the ownership of the apartment in the name of the perpetrator.

After gaining control over the property, the man sold the apartment for over 2.4 million hryvnias, causing material damage to the Kyiv territorial community amounting to nearly 4.9 million hryvnias. According to the police, the suspect has already been informed of suspicion under three articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, indicating the seriousness of his actions.

The court, having reviewed the case, chose a preventive measure for the suspect in the form of detention, but with the possibility of posting bail amounting to 2,400,000 hryvnias. If his guilt is proven, the man faces up to 12 years in prison.

Currently, investigators continue to work on the case, establishing the possible involvement of other individuals in the fraudulent scheme. The court has also imposed a freeze on the apartment to prevent further manipulation of the real estate.

Oleksandr Shalimov is not only a distinguished surgeon but also one of the key figures in Ukrainian medicine. Of Russian descent, he became one of the founders of the Ukrainian surgical school. Throughout his career, Shalimov performed approximately 40,000 surgeries and is the author of over 830 scientific works and 112 inventions. Additionally, he established two research institutes in Ukraine—one in Kharkiv and another in Kyiv—and was awarded the title of Honored Worker of Science of the Ukrainian SSR on December 1, 1967.

This case has sparked widespread public resonance, as it concerns not only the unlawful seizure of property but also the respect for the memory of a remarkable individual such as Oleksandr Shalimov.
