A Modern Public Space to be Established in Kyiv's Bessarabia
The Kyiv City State Administration has announced the implementation of a project to create a modern public space in Bessarabia, aiming to enhance accessibility and urban standards.
The Kyiv City State Administration has officially announced the launch of a project to transform the Bessarabia area into a modern public space. According to reports from Ukrinform, this initiative will revamp the territory in accordance with principles of accessibility and contemporary urban environment standards, marking a significant step in the development of the capital's infrastructure.
Valentin Mondryiivskyi, Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration, noted that since the dismantling of the Lenin monument in 2013, this part of the city has remained inaccessible to many pedestrians. "Currently, the square in front of the Bessarabian market is not utilized as a full-fledged public space. It does not meet barrier-free standards, as crossing the road here can only be done through an underground passage, which is not accessible for wheelchair users, parents with strollers, and many others. Therefore, the city plans to implement a new space project that takes into account accessibility requirements, current norms, and the peculiarities of the location," Mondryiivskyi stated.
The project not only aims to improve accessibility but also to create a comfortable environment for residents and visitors of the capital. Plans for the square include landscaping, the installation of benches, lighting, convenient pathways, and a fountain that will serve as a symbolic center of the new space. Fountains hold a special place in Kyiv's architectural tradition, as over 100 years ago, the famous cast-iron Termen fountains were installed in city parks and became an integral part of the capital's historical environment.
In modern Kyiv history, a similar fountain was established at Volodymyrska Hill, and now a similar element of beautification is planned for Bessarabia Square. Following the completion of the renovations, this space in the heart of Kyiv will become more convenient for daily commuting as well as leisure activities, aligning with contemporary comfort requirements.
The beautification project for this area has been reviewed and approved in several stages. The permanent competition commission for attracting investors at the Kyiv City State Administration has supported the involvement of extrabudgetary funds for the implementation of the works, as confirmed by the relevant decree. This indicates a serious approach to the project's execution and the attraction of additional resources for its successful completion.
The municipal corporation 'Kyivavtodor' has already initiated procurement procedures through the electronic system Prozorro, marking an important step in the project's realization. The completion of the project is planned for 2027, which will allow residents and visitors to enjoy a new modern space in the capital's center.
It is worth recalling that on December 10, 2025, the legendary Bessarabian market reopened after reconstruction, which was a significant event for the city's residents. The creation of a new public space in Bessarabia will be another step towards improving infrastructure and the quality of life in the capital.
