Veteran of the Crimean Tatar National Movement Asan Jemilev Passes Away

Asan Jemilev, a prominent figure in the Crimean Tatar national movement, has passed away at the age of 89, as reported by the Crimean Tatar Mejlis on their official Facebook page.

According to the news agency Ukrinform, the sad news was announced by the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people on its official Facebook page.

The statement noted: "On April 4, 2026, in Bakhchisarai, at the age of 89, Asan Jemilev departed this life – a person of great dignity, strength of spirit, and dedication to his people. He belonged to a generation that, despite exile, repression, and years of struggle, did not break and preserved faith in returning to their homeland."

Asan Jemilev was not only a distinguished activist but also the elder brother of Mustafa Jemilev, the leader of the Crimean Tatar people, who is also known for his active stance in the fight for the rights of Crimean Tatars. Asan Jemilev's life path is inextricably linked to the struggle of the Crimean Tatar people for their rights, honor, and future. His contribution to this struggle is hard to overestimate.

The Mejlis emphasized that this loss is painful for the entire Crimean Tatar people. "At a time when Crimea is once again under occupation, we feel the value of every life dedicated to the fight for freedom particularly acutely," the organization stated.

It is worth noting that Asan Jemilev became a symbol of resilience and dedication to his people, who have faced numerous challenges over the decades, including exile and repression. His life has served as an example for many young activists who continue to fight for the rights of Crimean Tatars even in the difficult conditions of occupation.

Recall that on December 26, 2025, another activist of the Crimean Tatar national movement, Dylaver Osmanov, passed away at the age of 71 in the temporarily occupied Crimea. This event also marked a significant loss for the Crimean Tatar community, which continues to fight for its rights and freedoms.

In light of these events, the Crimean Tatar people continue to unite around their leaders and fighters for rights, as the memory of individuals like Asan Jemilev lives on in the hearts of those who strive for justice and freedom.
