Couple Arrested in Kharkiv for Planning Terrorist Attack on Instructions from Russian Agent
Ukrainian security services have arrested a couple in Kharkiv who were allegedly preparing to carry out a terrorist attack under the guidance of a Russian intelligence officer. The pair, struggling with drug addiction, had manufactured explosives for their intended attack.
Employees of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in the Kharkiv region, under the procedural guidance of the regional prosecutor's office, have uncovered a married couple who intended to commit a terrorist act. This couple, suffering from drug addiction, acted on the instructions of a representative from a Russian intelligence agency, having manufactured explosives to realize their criminal intentions.
The detained individuals, whose identities are currently undisclosed, have been informed of their suspicion regarding the preparation of a terrorist act committed by a group of individuals in conspiracy. According to Part 1 of Article 14 and Part 2 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, the prosecutor requested a preventive measure in the form of detention, which was granted by the court.
According to the investigation, in March of last year, the couple began communicating with a Russian intelligence officer via the Telegram platform. They were tasked with creating a homemade explosive device (HED) and planting it in a predetermined location, which, according to operational information, is situated in the center of Kharkiv. To execute this task, the couple purchased all necessary components and means for making explosives.
While constructing the bomb, they followed the instructions provided by their curator. However, their criminal plans were interrupted when Ukrainian law enforcement apprehended them before they could plant the explosives in the designated location. During a search conducted at their residence, not only the explosives themselves were seized, but also the components for them, as well as a mobile phone that contained evidence of their collaboration with the representative of the Russian intelligence service.
This case serves as a vivid example of how international terrorism can infiltrate the everyday lives of Ukrainians and highlights the importance of law enforcement's work in combating such threats. The SBU continues its active efforts to detect and neutralize terrorist threats arising on the territory of Ukraine, especially in the context of the armed conflict with Russia.
It is worth noting that such cases underscore the need for vigilance among citizens who may witness suspicious activities. It is crucial for society to actively cooperate with law enforcement by reporting any suspicious actions that could indicate the preparation of terrorist acts.
The situation in Ukraine remains tense, and the challenges associated with terrorism are still relevant. The SBU continues its work to ensure the safety of citizens and to prevent potential threats that may arise as a result of aggression from Russia.
