Ukrainian Community in Greece Celebrates Palm Sunday and Engages in Volunteer Efforts

On Sunday, April 5, the Ukrainian community in Greece, particularly the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church of St. Nicholas, held solemn events to commemorate Palm Sunday, while also participating in volunteer initiatives to support Ukraine during these challenging times.

On Sunday, April 5, the Ukrainian community in Greece, notably the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church of St. Nicholas, conducted festive activities in honor of Palm Sunday. This was reported by the community on their Facebook page, as conveyed by Ukrinform.

Within the church, two festive Divine Liturgies were held, attracting a significant number of worshippers. A notable highlight of this year's celebration was the blessing of three new dalmatics in cherry and red colors for the altar servers, marking an important event for the community.

These new vestments, acquired through the efforts of the community, are intended for use during Holy Week, memorial services, and on the days commemorating the Church's martyrs. This initiative reflects the active participation of the community in religious life and their commitment to upholding traditions.

Following each liturgy, the traditional blessing of willow branches took place, an integral part of Palm Sunday celebrations. However, beyond the religious aspect, this day also marked a significant step in the community's humanitarian mission, which actively supports Ukraine in this difficult time.

“The faithful joined various volunteer initiatives proposed this Sunday and contributed to the assistance and unification towards the victory of our Ukraine,” noted representatives of the church community. This demonstrates the unity and proactive stance of Ukrainians abroad, who remain engaged with the events in their homeland.

The event concluded with a communal greeting in accordance with an ancient folk custom: “It is not I who strike, but the willow strikes; in a week, Easter will come.” This tradition underscores the deep roots of Ukrainian culture and customs, which continue to thrive even beyond the borders of their homeland.

The community also expressed gratitude for the documentation of the event by Vasyl Spiridonov and Yaroslav Siaavko, who captured significant moments of the celebration. This reflects the community's commitment to preserving the memory of important events and traditions.

It is worth noting that the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church of St. Nicholas in Greece has conducted the Stations of the Cross on Mount Piana near Athens for the third time. These activities demonstrate the active involvement of the Ukrainian community in the religious and social life of the country, as well as their support for their native Ukraine during challenging times.

Photos from the event were published on the Facebook page of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church of St. Nicholas in Greece, allowing all interested parties to join in the memories of this significant celebration.
