Sergiy Plokhiy to Deliver Lecture on Historical Roots and Hybrid Nature of War in Ukraine at Harvard

Sergiy Plokhiy, a prominent historian, will present a lecture at Harvard University focusing on the complex analysis of the ongoing war in Ukraine, recognized as the first large-scale hybrid war in history.

The announcement was made through a report by Ukrinform, which references the official event page on the social media platform Facebook. The lecture, set to take place at Harvard, will concentrate on a comprehensive analysis of the war currently unfolding in Ukraine, which is considered the first significant hybrid war in history, where traditional combat operations are intertwined with cutting-edge technologies such as the widespread use of drones, cyberattacks, and aggressive disinformation campaigns orchestrated by the Kremlin.

Professor Plokhiy, an authority in the field of Ukrainian history, will pay particular attention to questions regarding the origins of the Russo-Ukrainian war. He aims to explain why the armed conflict has reignited in the very region where the Cold War concluded over thirty years ago. The lecture seeks to provide profound answers to questions about how historical narratives have become weapons in the hands of the aggressor, and why this understanding is crucial for comprehending contemporary events.

The event is organized by the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute (HURI) in collaboration with the Harvard Center for European Studies. The lecture will be held at the CGIS-South Belfer building, in the Case Study auditorium (S020) located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. This event will take place in a hybrid format, allowing listeners from around the world to participate in the lecture both offline and online.

The Petrishin Memorial Lecture, under which this event will occur, is one of the key academic events of the year in the field of Ukrainian studies. It traditionally gathers leading experts, diplomats, and students interested in the history and contemporary challenges facing Ukraine.

It is worth noting that recently, at the Ukraine House in Washington, D.C., a presentation was held for Professor Plokhiy's new book titled 'The Nuclear Age: An Epic Race for Arms, Power, and Survival.' This book has made a significant contribution to understanding the global security challenges that the modern world faces.
