Production of Electric Locomotives for Ukrainian Railways Begins in France
French company Alstom Transport has announced the commencement of electric locomotive production for Ukraine's railways, as reported by the company's press service on Facebook, relayed by the Ukrinform news agency.
French company Alstom Transport has officially kicked off the production of electric locomotives intended for the Ukrainian railway system. This announcement was made public through a statement from the company’s press service on Facebook, as reported by the Ukrinform news agency.
In its announcement, Alstom Transport indicated that Ukrainian enterprises were selected to manufacture components for the dual-system electric locomotives known as Alstom UA8AC. This decision came as a result of a competitive selection process, during which Ukrzaliznytsia provided a list of companies it collaborates with for the repair of locomotives and other rolling stock.
Experts from Alstom Transport, relying on this list, chose Ukrainian suppliers capable of participating in the localization of production. This reflects the company's intention not only to supply finished locomotives but also to actively involve Ukrainian enterprises in the manufacturing process, which will undoubtedly contribute to the development of the domestic industry.
According to information provided by Ukrzaliznytsia, a range of essential components for the new electric locomotives is planned to be manufactured in Ukraine. Among these components are radio stations, locomotive safety systems, fire alarm systems, braking system elements, couplings, cabin heaters, seats, and parts for the sand supply system. Additionally, negotiations are ongoing to identify a manufacturer of wheels in Ukraine, a crucial element for the comprehensive production of electric locomotives.
It is noteworthy that the production of electric locomotives in France has already commenced, with the first locomotive's chassis currently being manufactured. This electric locomotive is scheduled for delivery to Ukraine in early 2027, where it will undergo certification and resource testing. Overall, the supply of the entire batch of 55 electric locomotives is expected to be completed by May 2029.
The new locomotives, based on the Traxx Hauler platform, will mark the first European-produced freight electric locomotives in the history of Ukraine. They will be capable of operating on both alternating and direct current. In terms of specifications, the new electric locomotives significantly outperform existing models, boasting a maximum power output of up to 9000 kW, a top speed of 120 km/h, and a starting tractive effort of 800 kN. Furthermore, the locomotives will be equipped with a modern engine control system, which will enhance working conditions for locomotive crews.
It is important to remember that in November 2025, JSC Ukrzaliznytsia and the French company Alstom signed an agreement for the supply of 55 freight locomotives, with a total value of 473 million euros. This agreement opens new horizons for Ukrainian railway infrastructure and will facilitate the modernization of the country's transport system.
