US President Donald Trump said he had a “very good conversation” with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, adding that the call focused more on the war in Ukraine than on Iran.
“We talked more about the war in Ukraine,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

Trump said Putin wanted to “help” end the US-Israeli war with Iran, but that he told the Russian president to end his invasion of Ukraine first.
He added that he had asked Putin to consider “a little bit of a ceasefire” in Ukraine, suggesting Moscow could soon announce a limited pause in fighting.
“I suggested a little bit of a ceasefire. And I think he might do that,” Trump said.
Asked which war he believed would last longer – Iran or Ukraine – Trump again pointed to his push for negotiations, saying he believed Putin wanted a peace deal, though “certain people” were standing in the way.
Separately, the Kremlin claimed that Trump and Putin had expressed “essentially similar assessments” of Ukraine’s leadership during the call.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said the two leaders criticized what he called the “Kyiv regime” led by President Volodymyr Zelensky, claiming it was prolonging the war with European support.
Ushakov also said Putin had offered to declare a ceasefire during Russia’s Victory Day celebrations on May 9, and claimed Trump had “actively supported” the proposal.
The Kremlin said the call lasted more than 90 minutes and was held at Moscow’s initiative, AFP reported.
It was not immediately clear whether Trump and Putin also discussed extending ceasefires in both Ukraine and Iran.
Trump also said he had discussed Ukraine with King Charles III during the monarch’s visit to the US, but added that the two “do not agree on everything” regarding the war.
King Charles called for “unyielding resolve” in support of Ukraine during a historic address to a joint session of the US Congress on Tuesday.
“Today, Mr. Speaker, unyielding resolve is needed for the defense of Ukraine and her most courageous people, in order to secure a truly just and lasting peace,” Charles said, drawing a bipartisan standing ovation.
The remarks came just days after the King’s son, Prince Harry, visited Kyiv in a further show of support for Ukraine.
