Speaking on Thursday, April 30, Kallas said it remained unclear whether any meaningful outcomes were achieved in the latest call between Trump and Putin. The Guardian reported that Kallas made the remarks at a meeting of Nordic and Baltic foreign ministers in Estonia. “When we see these calls between President Trump and President Putin, always there are a lot of questions unanswered,” she said. Kallas added that negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine appear to be “stalling” and stressed that the European Union wants to see increased pressure on Russia. She also pointed to what she described as contradictions in the talks, noting that Russia has simultaneously praised Iran in its confrontation with the United States. The EU is also assessing its conditions for engaging with Russia after the war, Kallas said, emphasizing that clearer expectations are needed before meaningful negotiations can take place. Earlier, Trump said he had a “very good conversation” with Putin , adding that the call focused more on the war in Ukraine than on Iran. “We talked more about the war in Ukraine,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. Trump said Putin wanted to “help” end the US-Israeli war with Iran, but that he told the Russian president to end his invasion of Ukraine first.
