Trump Requests $152 Million to Restore Alcatraz as a High-Security Prison
President Donald Trump has formally requested $152 million to initiate the restoration of the infamous Alcatraz prison, as part of his proposed budget for the fiscal year 2027. This funding aims to transform the 'Rock' into a modern maximum-security facility.
President Donald Trump has made a significant budget request of $152 million aimed at the restoration of the well-known Alcatraz prison, which is included in his proposed budget for the fiscal year 2027. According to reports from BBC, this funding is intended to convert the historic site known as 'The Rock' into a contemporary facility with maximum security capabilities.
The initial $152 million will only cover the first year of expenses for what is planned to be a significantly expanded prison. This project is part of a larger investment package totaling $1.7 billion for the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Trump previously announced on his Truth Social platform that he is directing the Bureau of Prisons to 'open a significantly expanded and renovated Alcatraz,' emphasizing that the facility will house the nation's most dangerous criminals.
However, Trump's proposal has faced immediate backlash from California politicians and former officials. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi described the proposal as 'absurd' and 'a waste of taxpayer money.' Critics have pointed out substantial logistical challenges, including the lack of modern water supply and sewage systems, as well as the high costs associated with transporting necessary materials to the island by boat.
Before its closure in 1963, maintaining Alcatraz was three times more expensive than any other federal prison. Currently, the site is managed by the National Park Service as a tourist attraction alongside the Golden Gate Bridge, generating approximately $60 million in annual revenue.
The proposal still requires approval from the U.S. Congress, where it is expected to face intense scrutiny alongside the administration's record $1.5 trillion defense budget request.
In addition to this, senators from both parties are demanding clarifications regarding the visit of sanctioned Russians to the Capitol. Senators Roger Wicker and Jean Shaheen raised counterintelligence concerns after a sanctioned Russian delegation met with American officials and visited the Capitol amid ongoing conflicts in Iran and Ukraine.
Originally, Alcatraz served as a military fortress for defense purposes and was transformed into a federal prison in the 1930s. If the plan is realized, it would mark the end of a decade-long transformation of the site into a tourist attraction.
