Tesla Reclaims Title of Largest Electric Vehicle Manufacturer, Surpassing BYD

Tesla has officially reclaimed its title as the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturer, surpassing Chinese competitor BYD in the first quarter of 2026. This achievement comes amid a rise in electric car deliveries, although the figures fell short of analysts' expectations.

In the first three months of 2026, Tesla successfully delivered 358,023 electric vehicles to customers, marking a 6.5% increase compared to the same period last year. This performance underscores the resilience of the company, which continues to maintain its leadership position in the electric vehicle market despite fierce competition.

Conversely, BYD, which held the top position in 2025, has faced a significant downturn. The company's delivery volumes dropped by 25%, totaling only 310,389 units. Analysts attribute this decline primarily to changes in China's government policy, which have substantially impacted the electric vehicle market.

The Chinese government has notably restricted support for the industry, with the maximum subsidy for electric vehicles now set at approximately $2,905. Additionally, the old car replacement program, which previously offered a compensation of 12% of the new vehicle's cost, has undergone revisions. The introduction of a new 5% tax on the purchase of electric vehicles, which were previously exempt from taxation, has also adversely affected BYD's sales volumes.

While BYD attempts to strengthen its position in the European market, Tesla continues to dominate the U.S. market. The cancellation of the $7,500 federal tax credit has forced all manufacturers to reassess their strategies; however, Tesla has managed to adapt to the new conditions and maintain high sales levels.

Interestingly, Tesla's success is largely based on just two main models—the Model 3 and Model Y. In contrast, BYD's lineup is much broader, encompassing a variety of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. Although the total sales volume of the Chinese company, including plug-in hybrids, reached 695,772 units, this figure still represents a 30% decrease compared to last year's results, confirming an overall trend of cooling in the electric vehicle market.

Thus, the situation in the electric vehicle market remains dynamic, with both Tesla and BYD continuing to seek ways to adapt to changing conditions in order to maintain their positions in this rapidly growing segment of the automotive industry.
