Situation in Ukraine as of April 2, 2026

Ukrainian forces continue to defend their positions in the Luhansk region despite claims from the Russian Ministry of Defense of a complete takeover. The Third Assault Brigade has firmly refuted these assertions, emphasizing the ongoing presence of Ukrainian units in the area.

In the Luhansk region, Ukrainian forces are steadfastly holding their ground, countering allegations from the Russian Ministry of Defense that they have fully captured the area. The Third Assault Brigade has publicly dismissed these claims, asserting that Ukrainian units remain active within the region. A spokesperson for the brigade remarked, "It is symbolic that on April 1, the Russian Ministry of Defense once again declared the complete capture of Luhansk Oblast by its troops. In reality, Ukrainian forces — specifically the Third Assault Brigade — continue to operate in the area." They further highlighted that in the villages of Nadiya and Novoiehorivka, as well as in Hrekivka, the Third Assault Brigade is maintaining its defensive positions despite ongoing Russian attempts to seize control of the region.

Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reminded the public that Russian occupiers have controlled most of Luhansk Oblast since October 2022. However, as of April 1, ISW gathered evidence indicating that Russians control 99.84% of Luhansk Oblast but have failed to capture the populated areas of Nadiya and Novoiehorivka, which are located east of Borova in Kharkiv Oblast.

Meanwhile, on April 2, a drone strike targeted the Bashneft-Novoil oil refinery in Ufa, Russia. According to OSINT analysts from the CyberBoroshno group, drones attacked the facility located just 1.3 kilometers from the Ukrainian state border. Experts confirmed that the strike occurred near AVT-5, the primary oil processing unit that plays a crucial role in the entire operation. An intense fire is currently raging at the site of the incident.

During the night of April 2, Ukrainian defense forces also destroyed four drones and a pre-flight preparation point for heavy Orion unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as an AN-72P aircraft and a Mech radar system at the Kirovske airfield in temporarily occupied Crimea. Robert Madyar Brovdi, the commander of the UAV forces, reported that the military units of the 1st Special Operations Brigade and the 9th Department of the Main Intelligence Directorate conducted a 'courtesy visit' to the base and pre-flight preparation point for the latest strike-reconnaissance UAVs Orion.

ISW has also noted a new tactic employed by Russia, which involves combining large-scale nighttime attacks with similar extensive daytime strikes. Analysts believe this tactic could lead to increased harm to the civilian population in Ukraine, as it allows occupiers to threaten a greater number of areas over extended periods and disproportionately affect civilian regions.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has simplified the procedure for the return of servicemen who have deserted their military unit. From now on, appointment documents will be submitted directly from the military unit to the General Staff, streamlining the process. The General Staff's press service stated that the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, has eliminated intermediate links in the processing of documents, which will reduce the time for personnel decisions. 'Recommendation letters, which are now purely electronic, should not be a way to transfer from a combat brigade performing tasks on an active section of the front to a military unit with more comfortable service conditions,' the press service emphasized.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna believes that Ukraine, due to its military experience, can become a guarantor of security for all of Europe. He stressed the importance of integrating Ukraine into the EU and NATO, noting that this is critically important for ensuring security not only for Ukraine but for the entire European region.

In contrast, U.S. President Donald Trump, in his address to the nation, criticized the support for Ukraine, claiming that the previous administration allocated $350 billion to Kyiv. He stated that the current administration has changed its approach to arms supplies. 'We are now producing ammunition across the country because we need it... He gave so much to Ukraine and received nothing in return. And I am selling them ammunition. The European Union is paying for this,' Trump remarked about his predecessor, Joe Biden.

The main focus of Trump's address was that the United States would continue to deliver powerful strikes against Iran over the next two to three weeks.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented on the situation, calling the potential U.S. exit from NATO and the blocking of aid to Ukraine 'Putin's dream plan.' He noted that the threat of NATO's dissolution, the weakening of sanctions against Russia, a massive energy crisis in Europe, and the cessation of aid to Ukraine appear to be part of the Kremlin's strategy.

In the Kremlin, assistant to the Russian dictator Yuri Ushakov stated that trilateral negotiations to end the war between Russia and Ukraine have been 'suspended.' He emphasized that Moscow maintains contacts with the American side but noted that Ukrainians are also actively negotiating with the Americans.

The European Union has received €1.4 billion in profits from interest on cash reserves derived from frozen assets of the Russian central bank, highlighting the financial consequences of the conflict and its impact on the European economy.
