On April 9, a court session was scheduled to take place in the murder case of Ukrainian linguist Iryna Faryon. However, the hearing did not proceed due to the absence of the defendant's lawyers. This information was reported by a correspondent from Ukrinform.
Present at the session were the panel of judges, prosecutor Dmytro Petlyovanyi, and Faryon's daughter, Sofia Osoba. At the beginning of the session, the presiding judge announced that a request had been received via email from attorney Ihor Sulima, who stated that he would be unable to attend the hearing due to a business trip to Kyiv and requested a postponement to a later date.
Additionally, another request was submitted to the court by attorney Volodymyr Voroniak, who also reported his absence due to health issues. He requested that the hearing be conducted without his participation. In light of these circumstances, the presiding judge raised the question of whether the session could continue and whether the case could be rescheduled for April 9.
The defendant in the case, 18-year-old Zinchhenko, expressed his desire to postpone the hearing, indicating that his lawyers were unable to be present. Prosecutor Petlyovanyi emphasized that in this category of criminal proceedings, the presence of defense attorneys is mandatory, and thus he did not oppose the postponement of the court session to another date.
Sofia Osoba, Iryna Faryon's daughter, expressed her outrage regarding the behavior of the attorneys, believing that their absence constitutes a delay in the judicial process. She stated, "I believe that failing to notify in advance about not attending court is a disrespect to the court, to those who have come, and to the journalists. Therefore, I consider this yet another delay in the judicial process."
After discussion, the panel of judges decided to postpone the court session until April 9. This decision provoked further outrage among those present, as justice in this case is being delayed due to the absence of defense representatives.
It is important to recall that on July 19, 2024, a tragedy occurred in Lviv when a man shot Iryna Faryon and fled the scene. Unfortunately, she died shortly after in the hospital. On July 25, the suspect in the murder was apprehended in Dnipro. The Halytskyi District Court of Lviv on July 26 chose a preventive measure in the form of detention without the right to bail for 18-year-old Dnipro resident Zinchhenko. Subsequent court hearings continued this preventive measure.
Iryna Faryon (1964-2024) was a renowned Ukrainian linguist, educator, political and public figure, Doctor of Philological Sciences, professor, and a member of the Ukrainian Parliament of the VII convocation (2012-2014).
