Health Status of Mircea Lucescu: Doctors Report Serious Complications

The health condition of 80-year-old Mircea Lucescu, a prominent figure in football who has coached clubs such as Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kyiv, remains a significant cause for concern. The University Emergency Hospital of Bucharest has reported that the results of a comprehensive CT scan conducted on the patient have uncovered serious complications that necessitate immediate medical intervention.

The medical report from the hospital indicates that the CT scan revealed multiple signs of ischemic cerebral strokes, as well as pulmonary thromboembolism. "The patient underwent a comprehensive CT examination today. The medical team caring for the patient has thoroughly analyzed the situation and informed the family. During the CT scan, numerous signs of ischemic cerebral strokes and pulmonary thromboembolism were detected. The patient will remain under strict supervision by a multidisciplinary team," the hospital stated in its announcement.

According to various sources, Mircea Lucescu's condition is assessed as critical. Experts explain that thromboembolism can lead to blocked blood flow in the lungs, complicating oxygen delivery to the body. Ischemic strokes, on the other hand, occur due to the blockage of brain arteries by clots, which can result in severe health consequences.

One neurologist at the hospital also noted that due to the complexity of the situation, the possibility of using a mechanical heart support system currently appears unlikely, adding further anxiety regarding the coach's ongoing treatment and recovery.

Mircea Lucescu was hospitalized on March 29 after feeling unwell while with the Romanian national team following a defeat to Turkey (0-1) in the playoff for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. On April 2, he stepped down from his position as the head coach of the Romanian team, which served as another indication of his serious condition.

On April 3, Lucescu suffered an acute myocardial infarction while still in the hospital. Doctors had to perform resuscitation procedures three times, and the coach was fitted with his fifth stent. Later, he was placed in a medically induced coma after experiencing severe cardiac arrhythmias that did not respond to treatment, raising concerns among his family and fans.

Mircea Lucescu is a distinguished football coach who has spent 15 years working in Ukraine, leading clubs such as Dynamo Kyiv and Shakhtar Donetsk. With Shakhtar, he won the Ukrainian championship eight times and claimed the UEFA Cup in 2009, while with Dynamo, he secured the UPL title in the 2020/21 season. He also coached the Russian club Zenit during the 2016/17 campaign. Previously, Lucescu spoke about his home in Donetsk, which he was forced to leave due to the war between Russia and Ukraine, further highlighting his difficult circumstances in recent years.
