Dario Srna, the former captain of the football club Shakhtar Donetsk and now its sports director, has shared his concerns regarding the health of his former coach, Mircea Lucescu. In an interview for PROFOOTBALL Digital, Srna stated that he had spoken with Lucescu just a few days ago, and he felt well. However, on April 5, he received troubling news that his mentor was in a coma.
"I spoke with him a few days ago, and he felt fine. Today [April 5], I received bad news that he is in a coma. Journalists have reported this. I will now call his family. God willing, he will come out of this state and recover. He is a strong man with a strong heart, so I am confident he will get through this situation," said Srna, expressing his support and hope for the coach's recovery.
It is important to note that Mircea Lucescu was hospitalized on March 29 after feeling unwell during the Romanian national team's training camp, following a 0-1 defeat to Turkey in the playoff for the 2026 World Cup qualification. Just a few days later, on April 2, it was announced that Lucescu had stepped down from his position as head coach of the Romanian team.
On April 3, while in the hospital, Lucescu suffered an acute myocardial infarction. Doctors were forced to perform resuscitation procedures three times, and the coach had a fifth stent placed. After experiencing severe cardiac arrhythmias that were unresponsive to treatment, the 80-year-old specialist was placed in a medically induced coma.
Mircea Lucescu is well-known for his lengthy career in Ukraine, where he worked for 15 years. During this time, he won the Ukrainian championship eight times with Shakhtar Donetsk and also claimed the UEFA Cup in 2009. Later, in the 2020/21 season, he won the UPL title with Dynamo Kyiv. In the 2016/17 season, he managed the Russian club Zenit.
Additionally, Mircea Lucescu has often shared memories of his home in Donetsk, which he was forced to leave due to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. His career and contributions to the development of Ukrainian football have left a significant mark on the history of sports in Ukraine.
