Today Marks the Anniversary of the Shelling of Kramatorsk Railway Station, Where Over 60 Lives Were Lost
On April 8, 2023, we remember the tragedy that struck the Kramatorsk railway station exactly one year ago, where a Russian military attack claimed the lives of over 60 individuals, including seven children.
On April 8, 2023, we reflect on the tragedy that occurred exactly one year ago at the Kramatorsk railway station. This shelling, carried out by Russian forces, resulted in the deaths of over 60 people, among whom were seven children. This information was reported by the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, citing data provided by the Security Service of Ukraine.
In the morning of April 8, 2022, at 10:28 AM, Russian troops launched a missile attack on the Kramatorsk railway station. At that moment, approximately four thousand individuals were present at the station, predominantly women, children, and elderly people, all attempting to flee from the hostilities unfolding in the region. The attack was directed against civilians who were hoping for salvation, and as a result of the ballistic missile explosion that occurred high above the station, dozens of submunitions fell to the ground, inflicting horrific injuries and claiming lives.
According to the Security Service of Ukraine, at least 61 people were killed in this horrific shelling, and over 120 individuals sustained injuries. Among the deceased were seven children, a particularly cynical testament to the disregard for human life. The missile used in the attack bore the inscription 'For the children,' which provoked outrage and shock within society.
In connection with this shelling, law enforcement agencies in Ukraine initiated a criminal proceeding. The actions of the terrorists who committed this crime were classified under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which pertains to violations of the laws and customs of war. This underscores the seriousness of the crime and the necessity of holding those responsible accountable.
The Donetsk Regional Military Administration also noted that since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the Kramatorsk railway station has become a crucial point for the evacuation of residents from Donetsk and Luhansk regions who sought to save their lives. Thanks to the joint efforts of government authorities, local self-government, enterprises, and volunteers, from February 26 to April 7, 2022, a total of 201,557 individuals were centrally evacuated, with 110,620 people departing specifically from the Kramatorsk railway station.
Furthermore, as reported by Ukrinform, a UN commission confirmed that the Russian armed forces bear responsibility for the missile strike on April 8, 2022, at the Kramatorsk railway station. This tragedy has become a symbol of the brutality of war and a reminder of the price civilians pay in the context of military conflicts.
Today, on the anniversary of this tragic event, we honor the memory of those who lost their lives and express our support to their families. This tragedy must not be forgotten, and we must continue to fight for justice and peace in Ukraine.
