The Taste of Home Under Fire: A Celebrity Chef's Mission to Feed Our Soldiers
Kyiv Post introduces 'Defenders' Kitchen' — a documentary project filmed in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine, just a few dozen kilometers from Russian positions, showcasing life near the front lines beyond combat.
The first episode of the project follows the soldiers of the 429th separate brigade of unmanned systems 'Achilles', where daily routines unfold under the constant threat of shelling, drone attacks, and artillery fire. In such conditions, food becomes more than just a basic necessity. It transforms into a brief moment of pause for the servicemen returning from missions, an opportunity to gather, converse, and rejuvenate before heading back to their positions. Utilizing limited supplies, the soldiers adapt and improvise, finding ways to prepare meals despite the realities of war.

At the center of the project is Hector Jimenez-Bravo, a Canadian-Ukrainian chef who has built his life in Ukraine for over a decade. Since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion, he has been traveling closer to the front lines, supporting the Ukrainian troops not as a soldier, but as a chef. In this episode, he cooks alongside the military personnel and engages with them about their experiences and motivations.
The project is highlighted by Kyiv Post journalist Kateryna Zakarchenko, focusing on the human dimension of war through everyday moments.
The next episode will be dedicated to the 'Charter' brigade, which will move even closer to the front lines, where cooking will take place in field conditions under even greater risk.
