The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has announced the arrest of a Russian agent engaged in espionage activities at a defense plant in the Dnipropetrovsk region. The detained individual, identified as an engineer, was reportedly spying for two Russian intelligence agencies: the Federal Security Service (FSB) and the Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR).
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has made a significant breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to combat espionage by announcing the arrest of a Russian agent who was conducting spying activities at a defense plant located in the Dnipropetrovsk region. According to information released by the SBU, the individual detained is an engineer employed at a strategic defense enterprise, who was simultaneously gathering intelligence for two Russian intelligence agencies: the Federal Security Service (FSB) and the Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR).
The investigation revealed that the Russian intelligence services successfully recruited the man through his son, who is currently serving a prison sentence in Russia for drug-related offenses. The agreement between the agent and the Russians was that in exchange for a promise of amnesty for his son, the agent was to collect and transmit confidential information regarding the fulfillment of defense contracts.
Furthermore, the Russian agents aimed to obtain geolocations of high-tech facilities and production areas within the enterprise, intending to launch missile strikes on strategically important sites. The SBU emphasized that it was able to uncover the agent's espionage activities in advance, document his crimes, and apprehend him directly at his workplace.
Investigators found that the detained individual had been tasked with identifying potential candidates for recruitment among his colleagues and the security personnel at the plant. During a search of his belongings, a smartphone was confiscated, which contained evidence of his connections with Russian intelligence services. The agent had utilized several anonymous chats on popular messaging platforms for communication.
The agent has been formally charged under part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which stipulates penalties for treason committed in conditions of martial law. Currently, the suspect is being held in custody without the possibility of bail, facing the prospect of life imprisonment.
This case underscores the serious threat posed by Russian intelligence services to Ukraine's national security, particularly amidst the ongoing war. The Security Service of Ukraine continues its active efforts to expose and neutralize intelligence networks that seek to undermine the country's defense capabilities.
