Ukrainian Security Service Prevents Terrorist Attack in Kharkiv, Arrests Russian Agents
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has successfully thwarted another terrorist attack planned in Kharkiv, arresting two Russian agents who were preparing an explosion in the city center.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced on Wednesday, April 8, that it has successfully prevented yet another terrorist attack that was set to take place in Kharkiv. Following operational actions, law enforcement officials detained two Russian agents who were plotting to carry out an explosion in the very heart of the city.
According to investigative data, the terrorist act was organized by a local married couple struggling with drug addiction. They came under the scrutiny of Russian intelligence services while seeking "money for a dose" in Telegram channels. This marked the beginning of their collaboration with the enemy, leading to the preparation of this dangerous crime.
Authorities discovered that the suspects had constructed an improvised explosive device and intended to plant it in a crowded area of Kharkiv, with plans for a remote detonation during peak hours when the most people would be present. The objective of this attack was to incite panic among residents and destabilize the socio-political situation in the frontline city.
SBU employees apprehended the agents while they were in the process of assembling the bomb in a rented apartment. During searches conducted at the couple's residence, law enforcement seized the homemade explosive device, remnants of components used for making explosives, mobile phones intended for remote activation of the detonation, as well as a smartphone that contained evidence of contacts with a Russian intelligence operative.
The detained individuals have been notified of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 14 and Part 2 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which pertains to the preparation for committing a terrorist act by a group of individuals in conspiracy. Currently, the perpetrators are in custody, facing potential penalties of up to 12 years in prison along with confiscation of property.
Furthermore, on April 2, the Kharkiv prosecutor's office reported that another man in the city would be tried for allegedly preparing a terrorist attack. According to the investigation, this Kharkiv resident also collaborated with Russia and intended to manufacture an explosive device, indicating the active presence of Russian agents in the region.
This situation once again underscores the critical importance of the Security Service of Ukraine's work amid the ongoing war with Russia. Preventing terrorist attacks and protecting citizens from terrorist threats remain top priorities for the country's law enforcement agencies.
